6870 is slower than a 4870X2.

I'd wait for 6950 or 6970.

Why would you have to wait 4 years? The 6900 series is due out fairly soon. November last I heard, but even if it is after that, it will only be by a month or 2.

ANd if you have a 4870x2, a 6870 is just pointless for you. It is not an upgrade. You will be spending money for less performance.

So buy form Amazon or something. You don't seem to be waiting 4 years for the 6870, so why would you have to wait for 4 years for a 6970?

And even if you can't get 6970, it's still silly to spend money on a downgrade. Just keep what you have.

or you can buy two and crossfire it if you can't get 6970

but he can sell both HS 4870X2 for $500 or more and buy HD 6870 and still have $100 profit, and btw its worth it because today game won't need more than GTX 480, and the added DX 11 effect was worth it

He has 2 4870X2's. 6870 crossfire is not an upgrade.

I beg to differ. Firstly he'll get DX 11 capability. Secondly, 6870 crossfire is less hot and hungry than 4870 x2 crossfire. Thirdly, quadfire doesn't scale very well. 4870 crossfire doesnt scale that well. 6870 scales beautifully.

Metro 2033, AVP, BFBC2, MoH, Dirt2 and more. - all games that can be enjoyed in DX 11, but not with your current cards.

I see it as an upgrade. You'll get better than GTX 480 performance without the power draw, noise and heat (of your current set up)

But I'd hold out for the 6970 regardless, it'll be e-vailable end of November.

DX11 doesn't add enough graphically to justify the expenditure. Anyone that buys 2 4870x2's is not all that concerned about power draw, considering they each pull more than a 480, and the only other feature it really adds is eyefinity, which comes with it's own set of bugs and he hasn't expressed any interest in as of yet. Performance wise, it's just not worth it for him to grab 6870's.

I still say 6900's or keep what he has.

DX11 hasn't added anything worthwhile. Not worth spending money on it unless you actually get a performance boost in the process. Even the54thvoid said to wait for the 6900 series and skip the 6800 series.

Trust me, I own 4870X2 as well. I've been dying to upgrade, and have tested some of the newer cards. They aren't upgrades yet. 6900 will mark the first real upgrade for us.

Yup. It's odd that AMD released the 68xx series first - it's just a rehash of the 57/58 series. For those that want the best cards, you'd be best waiting another month.

Or...

Antilles is being released in January and that's a dual Cayman (Dual 6970 spec). That should blow anything else out of the water. Though i'm sceptical it will be 2 x 6970's, that would be very expensive and very hungry.

Hit the nail on the head.

We will see what the dual-GPU cards bring to the table....lets hope for lots of goodness. :)

I also agree with Wile E.

The 4870 X2 is a fair bit faster than the 6870. To change video card would effectively be a downgrade and a waste of money. Keep what you've got and see what the 69xx series has next month.

I went from a 4870X2 + 4870 to 6870CF and found that the 6870 is faster, quieter, has DX11 and uses much less power at idle.

6870 crossfire should be the same speed as 4870 quad fire by the by due to shit awful 4870 scaling.

If you can overclock both cards to 930mhz you'd be looking at 235 fps when in crossfire mode.

That's exactly why I went for Tri-fire. The scaling made it almost as fast as Quadfire at 1920x1200.

Well that means you can run two at 950 right? :D

Could you do so and run a quick bench mark of something please?
( something that benefits from crossfire obviously he)

Thank you !

List to WileE. I have a single 4870X2, and I have not purchased the 6870, because, they are a downgrade in performance.

My brother, has a computer EXACTLY like mine, except he has a 6870. We play our games at 1920x1200, 16xAF, 8xAA, maxed out, and his framerates are consistently MUCH LOWER than mine.
