Been a while since I had a 5850 whats the normal max 24/7 temp these card can handle under load. I got a deal on a Asus 5850 with a heatpipe cooler and bought one. I bought on impulse because the price was so good but I'm gonna sell it after I play with a bit.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what the question is

they should be A'ok running up to about 85-90 degreees, beyond that I'd be worried, but my 5850 stock never really got over 70-75, and with a boosted fan profile in MSI Afterburer, 60-62 was the norm under full gaming stress.

65 odd with the boosted fan, overvolted at 1ghz core.

I second wolf's temps on my vapor-x cooler. If I kept the fan at 100% on 935/1350 I think my temps hit 67 after an hour of furmark.

My Master Card reaches around 65-71c on full load with 60% fan and the slave card at 55% fan averages around 60-65c. My settings are flashed with a XFX XXX 5870 @ 900/1250 @ 1.13v works like a charm!

Edit: Make sure your case has good air circulation flowing around your cards. My Storm Sniper case has a 240mm fan blowing to it on the side of the case. But, I have to clean it out because the dust filter is getting full again. Once I clean it out, I should see my temps lowering by 2-5c

Changed the fan to a Zalman VF3000N helped like crazy seems I have a hotter running 5850 chip but it seems to overclock allot better than other 5850 I have had. I run it for gaming at 925/5000 ( it will go higher and it never breaks 66c with my new cooler at 1.2v, while gaming) Plus the fan is near silent on the fan controller set to 2400 Rpms. It really Looks cool too here are a few shots of it. Was going to sell it but after some new performance bumps from for drivers releases, price drops on the 5850 and the flat out coolness of this heatsink and Asus card, I'm thinking getting a second one with the same Zalman heatsink. I having been trying to sell it for a week but cannot bring myself to do it. It doesn't look near as cool in these pictures as it does in person. P.S. the black Zalman cooler seems made for the Asus 5850 Direct CU card. From my old 5870 bench marks at these speeds you wouldn't know it's not a 5870. It seems past 900 core very little performance gains are made on the 5800 and 6800 series cards. Also the Direct Cu is a very nice cooler but nowhere near this one it allows my ram to go much higher and the whole card is cooler. I did , however have a hotter 5850 but again it overclocks better aswell. Just like some cpu's I have owned, but it appears my heat issues if there were any are long over.

Normal temps are different depending on the cooler. I'm using a Gelid Icy Vision on mine and temps don't go above 55c.

*Oh, if you're up to it (want to do it), clip off the "wings" on that Zalmann cooler. All they do is block airflow and make the thing look like a Boston album cover. lol.

Yes but E but with this cooler I bet you wouldn't see 45c overclocked. My 5850 would run, overclocked like stated above, in the mid 80's with a very good Asus Direct CU cooler, and is Zalman VF3000 is head and shoulders better than the Geil. Not that it's bad but this Zalman would kick it's butt, heck it can a handle a 480 gtx. My chip was on the hot end and according to ATI they can handle 90c no problem. My 5850 was approaching those temps at 1000 core. Also the Zalman heatsink cover just pops off no need to cutt it. I like Boston and the cover, with the blue Leds on, makes it look evil. Also with stock voltage, at say 850/ 1250 gaming it won't break 63c and is near silent. Remember this is on a hot chip. I also have a solid case side and no bottom case fans. My case has decent air flow but not in the VGA area. I had to change to a solid case side and remove my 250 MM fan due to my large cpu heatsink. With a side mounted fan this would be much cooler.

I agree with you, it is better than the Gelid. Though, the Gelid is better than the stock cooler and is much more quiet. If I had the choice now, I would go with the Zalmann over the Gelid.

mine was in this range

and now it's off the chart

Still if you look at the Asus card and even the side logo they go well together you have to admit and the air flow plus added heatsinks does make a difference for my ram. I took out my bottom expansion slot covers and it helped as well with VGA temps. It's not supposed to but it does. There is a dead air spot in the vga card area with my side fan gone. When I originally went intel I needed the ProTech cooler and it was hitting my 250 MM fan, so I removed the old 250mm fan and case side. After a failed mod that destroyed the fan I replaced the old case side with a solid one losing a bunch of air flow. The trade off was my system sounds quieter. Hope that made sense

I did some open sided case testing and it is my case air flow thats holding this cooler back. With the case side off it has no trouble at all doing 950/1250 furmark at 73c and thats good. I think.

so 80 to 90 is ok, ATI test the reference designs reaching this temps it's very powerful GPU and it can handle this temps too, you can see some w1zzard reviews here for different 5850

Well now that I have removed my expansion slots my card even oced to hell and back during Dirt 2 is only hitting 63c or so 950 core /5000 memory. I also reapplied my thermal paste and tightened the screws a bit. It appears it was all case air flow. This card is hitting over a 98 to 100 frames in races at on High/Ultra settings (atleast where possible) at x4/ 16aa 1920/1080p. Those are very good numbers with my x6 at 4.0ghz. I'm impressed these drivers have come along way. These 5850's when oced are very good cards and can run with the big dogs. I'm still half tempted to sell it because the gtx 480 are priced right now. Still it has to be approaching stock gtx 480 performance at these speeds. I wonder what the power draw is on these bad boys, because I had a gtx 480 once and my PSU was taking a beating maybe a second 5850 is in order here.

ok, if u use intel i would to say sell the 5850 and pickup two GTX470 but you going with phenom x6 and you have 5850 so other 5850 in crossfire will be kick GTX480 ass in performance, the nvidia cards still have better tessellation but didn't use it much in any game, but still one more advantage maybe u care about which is physics, so it's back to u now

I'm not sure at all. This 5850 is by far the best price performance card and it's no wonder AMD never let any partners pass 800 core because they will all match or surpass the 5870, making it irrelevant. The 5850 is now the sleeper card of this era. These are 5870/6870 performance hidden in a intentionally lowered core clock.
