Stock 580 vs Gigabyte Super Overclock 480

Super overclock has significantly increased frequencies: 820/1640/3800.
Stock for stock 580 appears to be about 15% faster in the (probably) 1920x1080 with AA and AF. But that Gigabyte is overclocked quite a bit...
Gigabyte costs 469 at newegg.

I missed the 580 $509 with 10% off deal at newegg the other day, so I wonder how the overclocked 480 stacks up against a stock 580.

the GTX 580 is just a re-worked GF100. Basically its what Nvidia wanted the GTX 480 to be in the first place. the only significant difference between the 2 is 512 vs 480 cuda cores. that 480 has a good overclock, but the 580 is only 48mhz slower. I'd say they'd either be on par or the GTX 580 slightly edging it. If you overclock and take that into account the GTX 580 would clearly win out.

This is basically an advanced 480gtx stealing some of the 580 gtx new changes and is on par with a stock 580 gtx. It has similar power phases and thermal protection plus a better cooler.

GV-N480SO-15I has incredibly pure power. It is compatible with ATX standard length PCB. 14 phase PWM design includes 12 for GPU, 2 for memory. Standard GTX 480 graphics card has 6+2 power phases whereas GIGABYTE’s GTX 480 SOC has 12. Personally, I'd wait for ATI's AMD's 69xx series to come out but given a choice between these two, I'd go for the Gigabyte

It's not put up against a GT 580 but i'd say it isn't as good and it's very noisy at load which is disappointing. I was looking at the KFA 2 GTX 480 OC, the MSI GTX 480 Lightning and the Gigabyte GTX 480 SOC. All of them seem to be lesser than the GTX 580.

My choice is now GTX 580 or HD 6970. I'll be waiting until the reviews before i buy.

I think you fellas are missing the point there is a money difference here. However, a better deal is buy a regular gtx 480 (which can be had for 290 on ebay) and add a AXP cooler then overclock that gtx 480 well past 580 gtx performance and save a boat load. AXP cooler are 65.00 and are equal to water cooling, thats a total of 355.00 and your getting gtx 580 performance. Plus the AXP is near silent.

Here is a Galaxy gtx 480 with a AXP on it and check out that clock and temps. Also as I said these gtx 480 are going for as low as 290.00 full retail boxed on ebay. Plus a AXP is 64.00 on ebay. Again a AXP makes a gtx 480 cool and near silent.

Again you missed the point 290.00 for a used but like new gtx 480 and add another 64.00 for a AXP that 354.00 for gtx 580 performance. The Galaxy was to show what a AXP does for a gtx 480. Also a GTX 480 is hardly a inferior anything. The gtx 580 is better but the price used gtx 480's are going for makes them the a very good deal right now. However we are way off topic now.

I wish it would (for the sake of competition), but I don't remember the time in history when single-chip ATI was faster than its competitor. There's a news article saying Powercolor reps said 6970 will be 30-50% faster than 6870. From what I've seen in tests, the difference would have to be 50-70% to reach 580 levels.

I'm only 19, and even i know there have been times where ATI was faster than Nvidia. Geforce 7 series vs x19XX series is a decent example. as well as the 9800Pro days n whatnot when Nvidia had their Geforce 5 series flop...and of course most recently the HD 5870 which was out for a good while till Nvidia had a chip to top it.

I have the Zotac 480 stock and OC'ing it will be keeping me warm for the winter to say the least. I will be swapping it out for the 580 soon!

^^Well, 850MHz is really whats attainable, as review sites havn't been able to break that barrier. Although higher voltage will yield higher clocks, I think FERMI is big enough power guzzler already.
