R18+ Video Game Rating in Australia: Approved

CHILDREN will be banned from playing the world's most popular computer games, including Grand Theft Auto and Call Of Duty, after the Gillard Government approved classifying them R18+.

The federal Cabinet has approved an adult rating for computer games after finding that many classified as suitable for 15-year-olds in Australia had been ruled suitable for adults only overseas.

As many as 50 games are now available to children as young as 15 but should rightly be played by over-18s only.

Some of the world's top-selling titles, including Grand Theft Auto and Call Of Duty, will fall under the new rating.

And Mr O'Connor also gave a guarantee he would not allow games that had been banned in Australia to be approved for release under the new R18+ classification, if it is approved.

most teenagers already know they can downloadz from the interwebz, just because mummy n daddy stop them from buying the game in the shop, doesnt mean there isnt an alternative way of getting what they want

This is an absolutely brilliant move, Now Australians will finally see games through retail channels that have otherwise been banned due to being inappropriate for 15 year olds to play.
even our steam wasnt safe we got a neutered l4d2 off Australian steam because of our inadequate rating system...you could still get the uncut if your foreign friends gifted it though

I agree we were becoming an apsolute laughing stock to the rest of the western world. Nice to see its finally being accepted that the average gamer aint kids there adults.

all this crap was around before the ranga, cant blame her for it. things are finally going good now that we have her in charge. R18 ratings, NBN... ummm... some other stuff.

That's true, but the only games I know of/remember being banned due to this are so old I wouldn't even bother putting them on my main rig :/ (thinking Manhunt here)

And yeah, L4D2 with gore is amazingly better than L4D2 without.

I'm glad to see this, i know it does not effect me but i always thought it was unfair on australians and almost made it seam like the ratings in australia suggested that games are for kids and teenagers only.

It's a shame that old games that got a ban won't be unbanned and given the rating though.

That made me think though, how are services like Steam and Impulse going to regulate this? I'm guessing not at all since everyone else has had R18+ since forever and nothing seems to have been done for it.

Dont even get me started on Micspam... I had a hard enough job trying NOT to do it in TF2

but I digress -- i had a nice mix - pavarotti, Beastyboys, Tom Jones, Cotton Eye Joe, Trashmen (bird is the word), engelbert humperdinck, rick roll, daftpunk and some songs off the team america soundtrack (every has aids --etc etc) got loads more but these are the ones i would spam the most
