Now that you see the performance with Sandy Bridge will you buy?

I am curious to know if you plan on upgrading to SB now that you have an idea of how well it performs against i7 series at it's price point (strange, I've not found a performance information in reviews yet). Below will give you an idea of the prices.

Yes, the "k" version is unlocked.

Well, at least they're not charging a huge price premium for it over the non-K equivilent. I think we won't see any K models in the cheaper segment though...

So you only get control over the multiplier now... does that mean you change core speed and nothing else?

It will be interesting to see what bulldozer brings for sure.

But the I5 2500K looks like the new people's quad core to me. Offers the same good value that the Q6600 and the I7 920 did before it.

If only if we didn't have to pay for a graphics core that most people are NEVER going to use, it would be an even better deal.

If I get a inegrated APU I will wait for bulldozer at 18/20nm, they should be able to fit a pretty substantial gpu core in there.

I'll be waiting for Bulldozer - I'm on a Q9550 @ 4Ghz and don't really see the value yet for me to upgrade. Maybe AMD will have a few surprises in store for us later this year....

I meant to say "NEVER going to use". Don't really see the point of embedded graphics unless it's in a notebook.

I have a Q6600 and a I7 920, and I'm not jumping on Sandy Bridge just yet. No need.

I'm saying if someone is starting out or upgrading very old stuff, then no reason not to go with 2500K as it stands right now.

Yeah as Ive said before I upgraded to 1156 from 775 moreso for access to better, more modern motherboards (such as my EVGA P55 FTW) than the CPUs themselves. I only had a dualie and buying a 775 quad just didn't seem to make a lot of sense anyway a few months ago.

TBH, most games and 70% of apps cant even take advantage of the monumentus power these machines have. They gotta start coding more effiecently to take advantage of all this extra power we got

Benchmarks I've been looking at don't make 2600k worth $100 more than the 2500k.

I'm all for hyper-threading if it helps, but the 2500k seems to do hold it's own with a nice overclock.

I had planned on getting one but still not 100%. Still running my trusty Q6600 as well and was going to up to an i7 either 1156 or 1366 in a month or so, but I'll wait a bit since Micro-Center isn't showing any in stock yet an see what happens. If the 1156 or 1366's drop a bit more with the 1155's coming out then I guess it's gonna have to wait lol

Waiting for bulldozer myself, I say "waiting" although I'm fairly happy with my current setup tbh, might switch to a different gpu down the line, but bulldozer would have to be much better for me to make a switch.

If I were in the position to build another dedicated cruncher/folder I would go the SB route. 210 W @ 4.9 GHz and a 6950 beats my 272 W i970 @ 4.1 GHz and a 9800 GTX+. With a low-end card and a 4.2 GHz OC we are talking estimated 180 W and that will outperform my hex PPD/W wise.

Even less power use if you get ~~H56~~ (edit: whichever chipset supports it) motherboard and use the integrated graphics chip. I'm seriously considering selling off my dedicated i7's for a bunch of these. Electricity alone would pay back any difference.
