Any Plans for six and eight core CPU's from Intel for 2011?

I am really disappointed in Intel having not planned a another six or eight core CPU in 2011. I noticed this because while looking at road maps and reading online that Intel claims that Sandy Bridge is strictly a 1155 socket quad core CPU really gets me upset. Is there a possibility that Intel will release a socket 1366 or 2011 CPU with more than four cores in 2011. I don want to have to wait to 2012 to wait for a more powerful CPU. Any ideas on this guys? Thanks

Yes later part of 2011 when they release the LGA2011 parts and motherboards. In otherwords the I7-900 series replacments.

Yeah you could go with AMD if you can't wait for Intel . Thing is even with AMD's 8 core CPU it can barley match the performance of Intel's i7 !

True true, but it would be nice if intel did not always make a new socket for every new processor they release.

I cant argue that, I still dont see why the 775 holes couldnt have been used at least for cooling. But I understand procs may take more pins to function (IE new sockets).

I am primary referring to lga-1155 and lga-1156, and lga-1366

Some boards were lucky enough to have 775 holes along with 1366 like my rampage II gene

I don't know but didn't the 775 socket last like a really long time ?
And since they are getting faster and more cores with smaller size each time then they would have to have new sockets right ?

yes 775 was introduced in 2004 and still has life in it now.1366 came out in 2008. the only socket that had a short life span is 1156 which was introduced in 2009 and EOL'd in 2010

That is what I thought . Intel isn't changing the socket as much as you think .
Oh yeah my 775 still has lots of life !

I guess it depends what you compare it to. If your comparing it to AMD's socket changes you are correct since AMD hasnt changed their socket since 2004

Man that is a LONG time to keep the same socket ! Isn't Bulldozer going to use the AM3 socket as well ? It would be nice if Intel kept the 774 socket for the i7 and such but I like new sockets they signify progress and innovation !

would it not be possible to plan ahead and make a socket with more pins than currently needed? maybe they already do, idk.

I understand the placement depends on the architecture of the processor. but looking at how it has evolved until now, and estimating beyond that, i would imagine they could get a few steps ahead.

but... then the motherboard components may come into play, and that would still need to be upgraded, as bios updates only go so far.

just thinking aloud, make sense?

Word is AM3+ which will work with am3 cpus, but bulldozers will not work in am3 sockets.

AFAIK No, hyperthreading is cheating as far as im concerned and dual socket mobos is not and option either.

Well 99% of computer owners dont upgrade everytime something new is released.. I'm still on 775 and can run everything thrown at me.



And ur question was answered, 6 cores is already available in the i7-970

am hoping socket 2011 releases sometime this year by at least q2 2011 because there are rumors saying Intel is going to release it from q2 to q4 of this year to q2 of next year. I cant wait that long lol. I am hoping to at least se some more six core models by q2 of 2011 since Intel road map has no information about future CPUS this year
