how soon can we expect to see something like native mkv support for the ps3 now that it has officially been hacked to pieces?

I'd say weeks. We just need a dev with an interest in it.

I'm not seeing too much done to allow native support for stuff, like driver level hack, it's more looking like apps level development going on, so that said, I'm gonna say a port of XBMC with native smb/ntfs support is how it will be done.

As soon as someone with enough $$ for a cell SDK and the mindset to work for free with a good knowledge of audio/video codes one up.

Cell is based on PowerPC. PowerPC 64 code runs on it.

thats actually a good thought. I never thought of this. Id bank on someone doing a custom fw or something like XBMC, before they develop an app for the ps3 FW.

i wonder if someone can finagle the iphone SDK then buy it for $100 through apple and then code apps for cell? i mean the SDK for iphone works on powerPC macs. and i dont just mean the program.

I'm curious about whether developers can add support for the RSX in OtherOS. I believe it was originally restricted by the hypervisor (back when OtherOS was allowed). That would really open a can of worms for graphics based apps in OtherOS.

i wonder if someone can finagle the iphone SDK then buy it for $100 through apple and then code apps for cell? i mean the SDK for iphone works on powerPC macs. and i dont just mean the program.
The SDK may be compatible but I'm betting that they use different compilation options. The iPhone uses a MIPS processor (I believe) which PowerPC is not. I have no idea what instruction set the PS3's cell chip uses but there are some open source development tools already available (see first post). Besides that, the official Sony SDK for the PS3 was leaked and I'm sure that the fact that it's illegal isn't going to stop everyone from using it...

EDIT: Wile E appears to be correct in that the Cell chip is based on 64-bit PowerPC architecture. The question is really whether mkv support will be added in GameOS or OtherOS first... Both are not without challenges.

The homebrew flood should start soon. The first 3.55 custom firmware has released. It does require new packages signed with the new tools released with the master keys, so there's not quite any software to install yet, as the current homebrew will not work.

http://www.ps3news.com/PS3-Hacks/Video-KaKaRoToKS-Releases-First-PS3-Custom-Firmware/

And this should make you happy, Rhino, it does not allow piracy. Which is just fine by me. I'll grab this as soon as some worthwhile homebrew hits the scene.

Epic.

But I'm reading and it doesn't add back OtherOS on 3.40+ yet eh? It's so close I can taste it.

Meh got this 360 for free from a bud and jtagged it myself. I think the homebrew scene for the 360 is still somewhat promising now that there is the libxenon sdk out. All of the homebrew written for the wii can be ported easily over since they both use an ibm powerpc processor.

But i would still rather have a ps3 for all of the emulators :p

I think AsbestOS might be able to be ported over to work on one of these custom firmwares. Probably need the kernel to be patched with some of the syscalls that the jailbreak payloads have. I'd rather they kept out syscalls that allowed backups tho. It might keep Sony off of our backs and let us keep homebrew.

Well thats pointless then :D I like the SNES emu etc tbh :)

I love how the PS3 was pretty much hacker proof and nobody really seemed to be working on it. Then SONY removes OtherOS. Annoys everbody and this brings the hackers out in force. Now, the doors have been blown off it!

I find piracy pointless. 90% of the games are on PC already, which is a better platform. The only thing I play on consoles are exclusives (and emulators), and of those that I play and like, I find good enough to buy.

And there were people working on it prior to OtherOS removal, but removing it lit a fire under their asses. lol.

So marcan42 (fail0verflow?) got AsbestOS running standalone on a PS3 Slim:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gItOpt81UnI

From the video
. . . this was done with a terrible hack that was not 'make self'. Once we fix 'make self' we will be able to do it a little bit more sanely. Then we'll work on making this an update file that you can just flash-- at that point you would only have Linux, you would lose GameOS . . . Once we have that working we'll work on a dual-boot version where you can boot GameOS from AsbestOS or Linux (with some kind of boot menu at the beginning). Once that works we'll release it all and let someone else take over because, as we said, we're not planning on doing longterm PS3 development. We're basically developing all of this to get it out there so anyone else can do whatever they want with it.

Unfortunately I would assume that this isn't going to be immediate.

On top of that I have concerns about AsbestOS. Though it is better than OtherOS because it gives access to all SPEs and the RSX, is still in it's infancy and (I believe) lacks driver support for the RSX and (therefore) can't launch the GUI. Dunno though, just speculating.

Still quite interesting though.

kakarotoks released the pup packer code, which means it's all ready for some enterprising dev to:

create a CFW that doesn't require signed packages, which will then not work with PSN, or purchases.

or create a packer that will sign any package. this, as far as we know - will work with the released CFW , PSN, and all purchases. that will also allow xbmc, etc to be ported, and simply signed and ran. this is ALSO the most likely next step, and (the package signer) shouldn't be more than a week or so off(my guess, by the current pace - which is actually very fast).

we're talking 3 days since the info was released, and kakaro/math/geoh are not releasing the juicy bits. however it is known how they got it, so it's just a matter of time.

Mr. Hotz getting sued by Sony's Legal Team.
It wasn't just Hotz that got sued-- The fail0verflow team was sued along with a hundred or so Does.

It appears Hotz has a good legal defense as he has filed against California's jurisdiction and Sony's claims of injunctive relief and joinder. The complete legal documents as aggregated by ps3-hacks.com:
http://www.ps3-hacks.com/file/255

fail0verflow has removed their github, despite it containing no copyrighted material, but it is being mirrored by quite a few other people:
http://www.ps3-hacks.com/2011/01/12/all-of-fail0verflows-ps3-tools-released/

The rather courageous Professor David S. Touretzky has mirrored Hotz's site in case Hotz, who continues to host the PS3 master key on his site, is forced to take it down.

It is likely that this suit will only slightly impede the flood of homebrew on the PS3. The various open source tools for creating homebrew on the PS3 are still widely available. Geohot (Hotz) and the fail0verflow team may be too embroiled with Sony to continue with efforts for legitimate dual-booting (AsbestOS and GameOS), but the development community will push-on nevertheless.

It is the linux OS. I do not know if/when they will get a working driver for the RSX in linux but it will be pretty awesome. :)

they deserve to be sued and to be fined in accordance with U.S. law. what they did was wrong and they will pay the price. but it is too late for sony. they know the key is out there and the tools so a modding we will go

somebody has to be the scapegoat and that will be the hacking team which is fine by me. they want to flaunt their illegal acts they will have a nice time paying sony for the rest of their lives.

what the heck happen to you rhino?

i think sony can't sue them because right now, its legal to "jail broken" your own hardware

ktr is correct. also, jail breaking your phone is much different than hacking the root key to a console and posting it on the internet.

back on topic...any updates on firmware?

I disagree completely. There is nothing illegal or wrong with modding hardware you own. The only thing wrong to do is pirate games. They haven't done that. Other people have.

What's wrong here is, Sony removing features people paid for.

I think GeoHot will win. It would be for the best of all of us if he did. Sony bullies their customers, and it needs to stop.

And thus far, a good, full featured cfw hasen't released yet, but we are getting a lot of signed emulators. I thnik we are still a week or 2 away from a good, full featured cfw that allows non-stock sys calls to allow for the really good homebrew, like a possible port of xbmc or something like that. I can't friken wait to be able to just access my samba shares and directly play my mkvs and subbed anime without resorting to transcoding.

You can run a TurboGrafx 16 emulator without cfw or a dongle, tho you need one of those to install it still. Once installed, it will just run. http://www.ps3news.com/PS3-Hacks/First-PS3-Homebrew-Emulator-is-Working-Without-Dongle-on-3-41/
