Looking for some 27" monitor suggestions. Price range is pretty much anything.

I plan on doing a tri monitor setup eventually but for right now I want a 27" in the middle and two 24" on the sides.

Currently have an ACER 24" and I can't stand how it takes forever to power up. By the time the monitor boots, I'm already past POST. Gets annoying.

So suggestions on 27" brands? I even looked at the over-priced Apple Cinema for $1000..but I don't need built in Webcam/Speakers...and I hear the glossy screen is...really really..glossy.

Top ones I was lookin at:

27" Samsung
27" HP

If you want the best looking. I'd say go for this HP HP 2711x Black 27" Full HD LED BackLight LCD Moni...
Im not sure if this has a glossy face, but it if does you will probably notice ANY amount of light that is in the room being reflected off that monitor. But the upside is that the colors pop moreso than a matte face screen. Do your research, whatever you have to do in order to find this out so you don't get surprised (including ANY other LCD/LED you might be curious in buying). This also has LED lighting which IMO makes for a better picture.

This is basically if you want to be able to watch TV with your monitor. An LG
LG M2762D-PM Glossy Black 27" 5ms HDMI Widescreen ...
I have the 23.6 inch version of this and it works fine. The speakers are not that powerful, so if your going to use this monitor and watch TV and movies, I'd say get a pair of 2.0/2.1 speakers so you get the extra volume you need.

And the other 2 Samsung monitors on Newegg's 27 inch monitor list are pretty good too, I have never experienced a Sammy before, so therefore I cannot comment any further on either of them. However, I hear good things about them.

My 30" is a Dell, which is rock solid and I've had good experience with Asus & Viewsonic monitors at work. (shrug)
It boils down to personal preference and features.

When you compare monitors with the Apple Cinema, do compare it with other 1440 in the y monitors and remember that a decent webcam with mic will cost you $100, so the Cinema display isnt too overpriced. The glossy would get on my nerves though. To compensate, you have to have it "overbright" which I dont like.

So perhaps the Dell UltraSharp U2711 might be interesting for you?

has anyone ever gamed on the Apple Cinema? Any ghosting? I noticed response time is a tad higher around 12ms.

If your concerned with ghosting due to gaming, I would suggest getting a monitor with 8ms or lower. And like Bonkers said, glossy will definitely get on your nerves sooner or later. You will always want to game in a dark room, unless you don't mind light shining off a monitor like mad.

My current monitors glossy, I'm in a darker room with the sun shining from behind the monitor so I don't get much glare unless I'm working from home and its around 10am-12pm when that sun is right in my eyes.

I'll peak at that Dell. Seem's nice for the price. Course the HP for the price gives me everything I need/want except for the higher res.

Do you have a budget?

I have Kreij's Dell equivalent (I guess) in 27" i.e. the size you're looking for. I can only say it's fantastic, great color rendition, shades of black & white are awesome and I don't see any ghosting or lag in games.

Not on the newest (Display Port) ones or any larger than a 23" but used the original plastic bezeled 1920x1200 from mid-2007 until last month when I got a newer 23" Aluminum one which has pretty nice, sharp IQ comparatively (and I always love my first one). All used gear free from work. Some of those Aluminum models did have some bad ghosting but it was not across the board. I'd have to check the response time; you've got me curious now.

Just got some 27" iMacs in with vibrant 2560x1440 displays will probably give TF2 a whirl on one. Can't run much more than that on such high res as it's only got a 5750 1GB.

EDIT: Looks like I am going to have to skip on the Apple 27". It seems to have windows drivers issues.

Dell or HP...it seems.

Me too. Oh man we also just got 4 sick NEC 30-inchers in for professional color viewing on production files. So want to haul in the gaming PC now. :D

I'd like to see a comparison between the Apple and Dell side by side.

Apple has LED backlighting, which is lower power and has faster startup response. The Dell uses CCFL but offers a 102% color gamut while the Apple has a 72% color gamut i.e. color spectrum is smaller as a result.

Also, the Apple is glossy vs. antiglare on the Dell.

I suggest don't get the Apple if your room is brightly lit or there's a window behind you.

Dell includes just about every input you might want on the back of the LCD - DisplayPort, HDMI, two dual-link DVI connections (all with HDCP support, naturally); and just for good measure they toss in VGA, component, and composite video connections as well - not that we would recommend using those if you can avoid it, though the VGA connection is always good to have "just in case". Like most UltraSharp displays, you also get a couple USB ports on the back, two more on the side, and a handy flash memory reader.

Besides having a higher color gamut and different backlighting technology, Dell uses 12-bit internal color processing with the ability to output 10-bit color. That means you can get 1024 levels of grey instead of just 256, reducing the amount of banding present in certain situations. 24-bit vs. 30-bit color also means you get a color palette of 1.07 billion instead of 16.7 million.

Read the rest of a very detailed review here.
