The overclocks. the fact its new technology and everything else. Its so tempting to ditch my 920 for the 2600k! Is anyone else feeling the same way??

$330 + $75+ = $405+

$405 upgrade w/ downgrade to no QPI and dual-channel memory instead of tri-channel says no. $400+ "upgrade" to an inferior platform (but superior microarchitecture) is not appealing.

Honestly, I've been tempted, but the setup I have currently is more than good enough(and really the CPU isn't holding me back one bit), the biggest thing stopping me from doing it is having to reformat my computer...I just did it last month and I don't want to spend an entire day doing it again...

It doesn't really matter how inferior the platform is when the performance is better. Everyone talked about how inferior the Core 2 Quads were to AMD's Phenom Is because the Core 2 Quads weren't true quad-core, but instead were two dual-core processors on the same package. Didn't stop them from outperforming the Phenoms and being more appealing.

Personally, I think 5GHz on air 24/7 clocks is mighty appealing.

It appeals to me was ease of overclocking and high overhead oc room. I'm jumping on core i5 2500K and asus p8p67 pro only because I was able to sell my core I7 and Gigabyte UD5 for $340. The 2500K combo was $370 after tax so it was a small sum to upgrade. Everyone is hitting 4.5-4.8 with minimal effort so that's welcoming.

agree with erocker, there are much better platforms coming out this year no need to ditch an i7 920 for a 2600k only to be disapointed that lga 2011 outperforms SB by a good margin.

LGA 1155 will be shamed by LGA 2011 (the bandwidth of LGA 771 without the latency of the Advanced Memory Buffer), the true sucessor to the LGA 1366 platform on which the 920 is based on. I would consider upgrading to LGA 2011 but not LGA 1155. However, the 920 still fulfills all my needs so I most likely won't upgrade until at least Ivy Bridge no matter how appealing 32nm LGA 2011 processors are.

Besides, "nine-twenty" sounds better than "twenty-six hundred kay." :p

So much penis envy in here. Anyone not afraid of feeling inadequate about their rig knows it's all bullshit. QPI? Wtf do I want something that offers no benefit for? Casting off something useless is a plus. Triple channel? Go check the maxxmem thread, dual on sandy > triple on 1366. And it's more than just the overclock, the 2600 has a clock for clock advantage on even the 980x in more cases than not. 2011 will be better? Well no shit dog, stuff that doesn't exist yet is always better. There's yet to be a sane argument for how sandy is "inferior" to 1366.

Yeah, LGA 2011 will be better than LGA1155, but by the time LGA2011 comes out LGA1155 will have been out something like 9 months already. Right now, if you look at what is available on the market, and what will continue to be available for some time, LGA1366 just isn't as appealing as LGA1155 unless you really want to shell out $900 for a Six-Core. We are talking about right now, not 9 months from now. I can understand your possition if LGA2011 was coming out a a couple of months.

Though I will agree with you, that for those running 1366, and even those of use running 1156, there isn't a real big appeal to move to 1155. Hell the appeal is small enough for me that it is negated by the simple need to do a reformat.

5000 series crossfire is a bust I'd move on to a newer gen before picking up another 5850.

As for SB... I'm pretty tempted by the thoughts of an easy 4.7Ghz on air but I'm not convinced its time to upgrade. I'll give bulldozer the chance to impress me.

I'm not sure I can agree with that. I have a higher-end system built around LGA1156 (Asus P7P55D Pro, Core i7 860) and I plan on moving to a S1155 system. The benefits I see is it's new HW to play with, it's faster (likely I'd run it @ ~4.4ghz vs ~3.8), and the power usage would be significantly lower (even OCed). Enough of a reason to me :)

Overclocking on SB is better in every manner. It's not even as easy as people say once you're getting into the upper limits (for those who are missing the challenge). The multi-only seems to benefit the stability of leaving speedstep on, which is incredibly beneficial for power and chip life. I'd never want to go back to how things were before.

And as explained before, the cost of upgrading to SB from any platform is practically irrelevant. The cost after selling your old gear is directly proportional to the performance upgrade you're getting. Old gear, performs worse, costing you more to upgrade, making it more worth the upgrade. The only people who could say that SB isn't an upgrade are 980x owners, and technically that's only true if you frequently use programs that have near perfect core scaling. For someone who's just gaming on a 980x it'd be an upgrade that MADE YOU MONEY in process, both in selling the chip and in power bills. SB just beats up on 1366 from every angle.

This. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I've moved to Sandy bridge because it's a new toy, and the power saving. However, I cannot agree that overclocking Sandy is better than 1366. It's much easier (which isn't a plus in my book), and it gives no room for subtle adjustments in clock speeds. So, basically you never know exactly what your chip is capable of. For instance, you are stable at 4.8ghz on 1.32v, but not at 4.9. Maybe the chip could go to 4.88, but you will never know. Memory clocking has the same sort of problem. There are limited dividers to work with, and no room to tweak them in small increments, since many report stability issues whe raising BCLK over 100.

Do I regret the move? No. The raw speed and good temps on air is really cool, but I'll be ready to move on to 2011 after it's been out for a bit for the reasons above.

What isnt so appealing is the lack of motherboards that support full 16x pci-e lanes. Theres only two expensive ones that will crossfire with full 16x. most do 8x 8x x4.

Some might not be so picky but me I AM! shocking that the Asus Maximus Extreme IV DOESNT either!

not likely to be an issue with dual 5870's w1zzard did a review of the gtx480 at different lane speeds and the difference between 8x and 16x was less than 3%. Your q6600 is likely causing more than a 15% bottleneck on your cards (believe me just came from a q6700 myself, my 950 at stock is faster than my q6700 was at 3.6GHZ) so you'd gain far more perfromance than you'd lose due to lane restrictions not to mention the faster mobo chipsets and memory.

so actually SB would be one hell of an upgrade for you if 1366 was a nice one for me.

I think the point is from 1366 to 1155 you gain a marginal increase which is up to you if those few extra pts per clock matter than by all means go for it.

For the rest of us lga 2011 seems like it will have more to offer and we won't be able to afford to go for it if we snag 1155 now.

If you wait for the next big thing, you'll always be waiting!

Bulldozer is still a big question mark on release, performance and pricing. Sandy Bridge-EX isn't coming until Q3.

Doing 4.5 GHz+ on relatively inexpensive mobos with modest cooling seems like a good deal to me. The new AVX extension is also going to be useful.

sb is not at all apealing to me, I want real overclocking on my setup

i agree this is so easy you could do it with a button. kudos for intel for a good clocking design however bumping multis to oc is boring to me

IMO OCing on Lynnfield is also really easy though, I got a 1ghz OC by disabling Turbo, upping the BLCK, and increasing the CPU voltage. 1st try I got 3.8ghz fully stable. Admittedly, SB is even easier, but still...

i got 4ghz on my i3 using the auto ram settings and bumping the multi 4.6ghz came with a little more volts so i agree this is why i have a stack of s754 stuff i play with it makes me happy

Haha :D

I've repeatedly tried to OC my laptop without success...and I don't have anything else to try with :ohwell:
