480 woes

Right, looked at it and... you have dry joints for sure my friend. The card is bad unfortunately.

Look at the block of six, the top left solder joint. See that telltale crack circling the pin? There's your dry joint right there. There are one or two other potential candidates, but I can't quite tell.

And unfortunately, if you see one, there are guaranteed to be more. And they can be in places that you can't get to, either.

This is a significant reason why electronics that run cool are so highly valued. Less heat stress, less cracked joints, it's a direct relationship.

The brown icky-looking stuff is indeed dry solder flux and can be ignored.

It looks like your friend sold you a faulty card. I wouldn't rule it out that it played up intermittently for him and he just didn't tell you.

Not always - Once got a Palit GTX 275 which shut down the PC every time tried to game anything other and WOW (lol). I suspected the PSU but it was the card in the end.

There is still some connection there, not usually a total break.

It'll be high resistance, causing a lot of heat and will cause the power delivery to be erratic and unstable - prime card crashing stuff.

The fact it won't start properly on power-up is a typical sign of this. Does it run better once it's warm?

Even if your card runs partially now, it is unfortunately heading for total failure. I'm sorry that there's no better news here.

it dont even start to get warm lol, think im just gonna stay with the RMA, my 460 with hold me over till then. i dont think it was the sellers fault at all and i dont blame him, hes helping me ALOT and is even giving me a discound on the next buy i make from him. top bloke

I had a shutdown once. Thought it was PSU not being efficient anymore, turned out PSU was overheating. PSU fan gave up so replaced it. Not a problem ever since.

agree this doesn't look like it "just happened" look at the pcb around the pins it looks like it's been an ongoing issue.

@op cool beans that the seller is going to rma it. hopefully it won't take too long.

If it fails to POST, you can rule out the 480 or any driver/software issue. In those cases it would post and then give an error code or something.

Failure to POST could be either RAM or PSU issue.

It's definitely the card. Look back a few posts where Gas2100 posts a clear picture and I explain the dry joint.

His friend that sold him the card is helping him to RMA it, which is great.

on another note, if your PSU can handle 460 SLI with Furmark and IBT 8 threads, it should handle a gtx 480
