So I'm going to be taking apart my HAF932 when it gets in to paint the interior black. I plan on taking it down to just where it is riveted together (don't want to completely disassemle. Does anyone have a paint suggestion that they have used in past builds? I was thinking of a flat black or maybe satin black. Do you suggest a primer, or clear coat? I don't want it to be shiny, and this will be my first time painting a case. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

doff black?
The best result is sand the old paint, then put base paint, the color then re coated with clear paint, it would be max
if you want deep clear just add some layer after that, just make sure that every layer that you re coat is dry enough so you can avoid bleeding
and if you spray dont be too close coz it would bleeding

Well the interior is just unpainted steel I believe (possibly aluminum) but to my best knowledge steel. I saw a universal rustoleum with a pistol trigger at home depot for $6-7 a can... #245197 or #245198 and it says no primer needed... was just wondering if those would work... again just looking to make the interior black as well

aluminum, it can be sprayed directly
i usually clean it with water and little soap then brush it about twice then dry it before start painting, just make sure that theres no dirt left and the paint could glued better

My friend had a diamond plate aluminium truck box that he wanted camo painted to leave down by his private fishing pond, we found some very nice self etching flat primer at auto parts store.

It's about twice as expensive as regular spraypaint, $7-8 a can, but it works very well.

Self-Etching Primer is a MUST!!!!
It bonds to the metal properly, and it gives the next layer/colour something to adhere to. If you don't use a self-etching primer first, it's going to flake off like the 2 cases I did a few years ago.

That's what I was wanting to know, it's just the inside, the outside is a sleek satin black to begin with :toast:

Are you going to sand the inside of the case?

Sanding isn't required. Sure its the proper way to do it but sanding the inside of a case is a pain in the ass.

I've painted many cases over the years and all i do is use something to clean the case and dry it well then spray. No sanding, no primer, no clear coat. I spray one coat, let dry and spray a second coat.

Done.

I have never had paint 'flake' off before and the paint jobs always last the life of the case.

Clear coating is nice as it makes it easier to clean dust out but usually clear makes it shiny.

And they make a 'black edition' of that case. You could have bought that and been done with it.

Aah, I've only done a couple of cases, first one I used some standard black spray-paint, the second one I used some "Barbecue Spraypaint". Specially made for barbecues. It was useless

What type of paint did you use for the cases you've done?

If you want to clearcoat it they do make matte clear coat, even if you use a glossy paint it will dull it.
As to sanding it is recommended, or you can use a steel wool pad to skuff it a little, will help the paint to stick better. Just make sure you clean it out well, you dont need steel wool floating around in there!

Proper way to prep the metal is to make sure it doesn't have any oils on it then wipe surface with white vinegar and let dry.

If there are oils, use 91% medical grade isoproply alcohol to remove first.

well I wont be painting it tonight anyway now... Got the case, damaged in shipping

*update* After talking with a cust. serv. rep. all they can do is refund when I ship it back... So, I just went and ordered the Black edition -$20 isn't worth the aggrivation at this point, lol... Only thing that I wish the black ed. came with was the fan on the side --- Oh well...

Looks like your problem was solved for ya i guess. Maybe you can ge the side fan and panle from their support? I have a silverstone case that didnt have a side window, and the newer addition had one, so i contacted their support and orderd the panel with the side window from them, paid them directly and in a little while had what i wanted.

I think the window instead of side fan looks nicer but I can certainly understand you wanting more cooling. Good choice though for sure!

Wipe with alcohol, scuff with scotchbrite pad and wipe again with alcohol.

cant comment on the paint specification,
but if you want to get a non shiny finish.
get a foam roller.

also get a sponge (Same roughness as the foam roller)
you can use the foam to paint it. dip it paint and blob it on the case :p
