I need a really good monitor for movies and games!

I have been searching around for a while and I really can't decide what to get. I want something with great response time, great color and crispness but I am not sure if I should go for a large format monitor or a TV. I want to watch blu-rays and play FPS games on the screen with no lag between the game and screen. Any suggestions? Price really doesn't matter I just want to get something that will work extremely well. I don't want anything smaller than 23". LED would be cool but I haven't experienced it on an monitor while playing games.

I bought an NEC LED monitor but it came damaged so I am just getting a refund for that and looking for something else.

Any help would be great! Let me know what is good!

since you're going movies and games, get a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor - 1920x1080, not 1920x1200

Thats what I was thinking.

I found this ASUS LED on newegg and it seems to be pretty good. Anybody have any input on it?

Thanks for the advice. I have an older ASUS 222H 21.5" 1080P that I am using now and have been happy with it to an extent. No real complaints.

I was really looking at it because it still has a 2ms response time that a lot of the more expensive other brands don't.

it is quite a difference, but not needed. if it was so fantastically better, companies would be pushing IPS panels much harder and far less people would buy TN.

I see. Well if it is still quite a difference I think I will find a nice ips panel monitor instead. I like the fact of better viewing angles. I won't toss out any really good TN panels in my search, though.

Make sure to differentiate between input lag and response time. These terms are often confused and both should be considered.

A real life example is my Samsung 275T. Beautiful colors and overall picture, fine response time, but input lag so bad it's worthless for twitch gaming (related post).

That is exactly what I was looking for in a monitor. No input lag. Basically that is my main concern. Then picture quality and color vividness. I want vibrant and rich color. Something that looks like I can reach out and touch it. I am talking to a guy about buying one of his alienware optX 2310 monitors but I am not quite sure on it.

I really just bought this monitor from a pawn shop, It has a recomended resolution of 1366 by 768 and it is 19inches diagonal and 18.5inches of actual screen space.
It also has a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and a 5ms response time. It works great with windows vista and windows 7 ( i have only had it for about an hour now IM NOT JOKING!) and with ubuntu10.10 and 10.04 it has a slight color issue you can fix it by using one of this monitors display modes or what ever you call them.

It has a high price there but at the value pawn i went to it was only $89
and i believe there is also a low price on newegg.

anything above 27", make sure you can sit back.

games need you to sit further back than movies do, or you end up with motion sickness. keep that in mind.

Yeah I am thinking on that. I might have it a little too close for games. Hard to beat value though, as far as going with a high quality monitor that is much smaller but close to the price. I am so torn its not even funny lol.

consider a 32" 1080p then, fits in the middle of HDTV and PC monitor. at least they'll be a VA panel and not TN (dont forget LED backlit tho)

From first hand use I'd suggest Dell, either the 27" 2560x1440 @ 16:9 or the slightly larger version @ 16:10.

The Dell is an LCD with an IPS panel. I can't complain with how the gradients of whites and blacks are displayed (I've run tests and seen all the blacks and whites inbetween-shades clearly) but to be honest I haven't had the occasion to test a LED monitor.

I can't complain for lack of brightness though. Unless I have the sun shining through the window or all the room's lamps lighted up I have to reduce the brightness of this monitor.

Yes it does.
My prior monitor was a (very good and still pixel-perfect) 22" LG, 1680x1050 TN Panel.
But the colors weren't perfect - mostly depending on vertical angle rather than horizontal. For example I'd be seeing something pink, then if I put my monitor higher up it'd turn purplish-grey.
Also in the horizontal aspect, colors would get weirded up if I got too much to the left or to the right.

The U2711 I got can't be compared for color fidelity.

One final comparison is that my LG was 2ms grey-to-grey and this U2711 I have now is 6ms. From my user-point of view I see no difference neither in g2g nor in input lag at all.

Thanks. I was looking into the Dell U2410 actually since it is $449 shipped with a promo code and I think that would do me just fine. The 27" is 899 shipped so idk. I could get 2 24" for that.

I have read around and I see that the u2410 isn't the best for fast paced gaming which is what I will be doing so I think I might not go with that. Lol I hate trying to make up my mind with this sort of thing. I may end up going with the Alienware OptX 2310 Monitor after all, it may have a TN panel but it is perfect for gaming. So I've heard anyway.

Would it be feasible for you to get one monitor for gaming and another for multimedia? I use a trio of P1130 21" CRTs for gaming and a 275T for multimedia. This works well. Finding one monitor that has low input lag, excellent color reproduction, and a size that's good for both gaming and multimedia can be challenging.

That is exactly how I am feeling right now lol.
