Trying to help someone - 8800GT not responding

this is a person's PC problems from another forum I visit. You guys have never steered me wrong, so I'm gonna see what you think:

Alright so i have a GeForce PNY GT8800 video card and a Gatwway GT5220. So the problem is sometimes my video card works until i restart or turn off my computer. The fan on the card gets really loud and the computer power light flashes like 6 times and takes forever to turn on. When it turns on my monitor doesn't even show the start up screen or anything. I did some research and some people said it could be my motherboard, Anyone have some input to whats going wrong. I also have all the latest driver and all that good stuff.

He plans to buy a new mobo. I'm just wondering if it something I can't think of.

Power supply, those towers only come with 300W psu's

And theirs no way that psu is still pushing out anywhere near to 300W knowing the cheap stuff gateway puts out.

The information is a little skinny to make any real kind of informed assessment, but I too would suspect degraded power supply or mobo.
Try taking some of the load off the PSU (unplug anything not needed to boot) and see what happens.

Well, first of all, the 8800GT needs a 400w power supply with at least 22A on the 12v rail, and none of the power supplies available for that system meet criteria...not even close. So, he could have killed the card or the power supply or both, or they are near death.

or he could have just not plugged in the 6 pin on the card and its not working because of that.

as for "needing" 400w and good 300w can power a 8800GT however a cheap POS 5 year old gateway PSU will not

If it was working okay and just started to exhibit these symptoms recently, that would seem unlikely (but you can't rule out him fiddling with something).

I'm 99% sure that is not the problem, and if if happens to be, he has much bigger problems on the horizon. If he is trying to power the 8800GT with that PSU, he is seriously risking a burned out PSU that WILL take out other components with it. I promise that. No matter what the problem is here, he needs to replace that PSU yesterday.

Number one rule of any PC. The power supply is the foundation of your system. It is more important than anything else, period.

I so agree . If the PSU is a 300W then he should be getting at the very least a 550W for that setup .

Because of this one reason alone .
GeForce PNY GT8800 video card .
I am not one that would go bare min on any PSU requirements , it is the heart and soul of a computer . Even if they only have a X2 3800+ seems a bit skimpy to get a 400W or 430W PSU . JMHO is all . Why would any one want the bare min is beyond me . MAX that PSU out and you never need to worry again . But hey if the bare minimum is ok for you then I say go for it . :ohwell:

The CX430 is definitely not the bare minimum. His system is pulling 250w max, the CX430 can push out 335w+ on the 12v rail alone. For a system like his, there is no point in over spending on a PSU.

it draws a HUGE 350 watts with 2 HDD 2 ODD and 12 USB i figured i would do a worst case scenario.

and guess what running a 9800GT in my HTPC with a 300 watt FSP and my HTPC draws way more juice than his rig will

I really don't know if that Gateway case will take that PSU or not, but it would work just fine to power his current system. That Corsair has a strong and stable 12v rail.

Oh stop it. That PSU is not overkill, it is perfect. It will power everything just fine, without stressing the PSU too much.

It maybe over kill but you can always apply the PSU to a better and bigger system later on with out worry right ? Maybe this is how I am looking at things ? . At any rate the main thing in this is to look at the PSU it seems to be the cause of the problem . so getting a new stronger one is the one thing to try first .

WOW, forget the PSU and go for a Chevy smallblock, lots of power and he can drive it down the street.

How much is in the budget for this operation, and will the insurance cover the cost?

And... is the diagnosis complete?
