AMD may abandon processor brand names

Advanced Micro Devices may can specific brand-names of its microprocessors in order to emphasize its corporate AMD Vision trademark and attract attention to its corporate brand. As a result of the move, Athlon, Phenom and Sempron will vanish into oblivion.

When AMD completes its consumer desktop processor lineup with code-named Llano and Zambezi microprocessors later this year, it will not introduce any new brand-names for them, but will divide then into different classes of its Vision platforms, according to a document seen by X-bit labs. Instead of traditional Phenom, Athlon and Sempron, AMD's product family will include FX-series, A-series and E-series microprocessors.

It really doesn't matter what they're called as long as they distinguish between enthusiast, mainstream, and budget.

This wouldn't bother me.

All I care about is that the CPUs are clearly labelled according to their performance and class and they don't start doing nvidia style bullshit rebrands.

Why can't they make it plain and simple?

AMD Axxx
AMD Bxxx
AMD Cxxx
AMD Dxxx

A = high end
B = mid end
C = low end
D = netbook low power

This way you'd have AMD A550 Black Edition as highest end CPU and AMD E120 as lowest end netbook CPU. The higher in alphabet and the lower the number = the lowest model.
The lower on the alphabet and with highest number = the highest model.

Why don't they keep this naming scheme forever and throw in special names to markk the series name? This way it's simple to know what you're buying, where it falls on the performance/price chart and the special name will tell you when they were made (what series).

so they aren't bringing back the FX series they are ruining the tradition FX name making it a whole line of chips this is ugh. thanks while we are at it lets make the next mustang GT500 a inline 4. AMD ruining traditions one line at a time.

on a happier note it explains why the E-350 was just an E-350 and not a "sempron" which is what it will fall under lineup wise

Like others have said, same thing goes for me. As long as they keep a good price/performance ratio and make it distinguishable from each segment, I'm ok with this.
But everyone has got to admit, this is making the computer hardware loose it's character. It's stopping to sound cool and it's getting more geeky.

sounds simpler to me. Its not like the average customer knows the difference between phenom, athlon, and sempron anyways. FX sounds stronger than A and E, common sense will word for most in this case, more letters must mean better lol. A and E i still think will be confusing to avg joe/jane.

That could be arranged with normal letter association, that don't mean anything, but end up classifying the component. LE for Semprons, GLS for Athlon, GLX for Phenoms and FX for the über-Phenoms. I took the example from Mitsubishi.

personally i dont like the idea
maybe amd inspired from mercedes or bmw that say E series, G series
alphabet + number dont make any sense, its not like phenom a5678
or since amd take ati too they want to make everything simple so they want to put their brand then their processor type
