Something wrong with the Gigabyte GTX 560 Super Overclock?

This card has been on preorder everywhere for a while and is clocked really high (1GHz on the core). It seems like it will be due to on 28th Feb.

I preordered mine from Novatech, but it has since disappeared from their site, although my preorder is still pending.

I called them up and they said that Gigabyte are delaying these cards, because of overheating issues. Anyone heard any problems about these cards?

I wouldnt doubt overheating indeed. Considering the insane overclock it has.. Gigabyte needs to revamp their qc and testing on whats the stablest OC they can get out of their cards. Have a consultant that has a true in depth experience on OC and not just some by the book schmoe who probably just play WoW with his GPU

yeah. 1ghz thats pretty insane coz any vga on 800 or 900mhz has problem on heat. and heat will give bad effect on performance,life time and so
i wonder what cooling type that will paired with that
i dunno if gigabyte announced it then delay it. its kinda funny like they announce a product that they dont even test on real condition

The problem is nVidia already pushed these cards pretty damn far clock wise to make it look like they really offered something over the previous GTX460 they were replacing.

So Gigabyte is probably running into 2 problems:

1.) They aren't able to find enough chips that bin high enough to handle the 1GHz clock.
2.) The chips that can handle the 1GHz clock likely require so much voltage that they are either overheating* or popping vregs.

*Overheating doesn't seem to be too likely to me, at least not overheating of the GPU, since the cooling solution they are using should easily be able to handle the heat. I'm guessing it is more likely vregs popping or they just can't get enough chips that can do 1GHz reliably.

I'm not sure about the VRMs popping though. Surely that would only happen if they cheaped out on the components? Oh, I see...

If and when this card is released, I reckon we'll see a positive side effect: the GTX 580 will reduce in price by a good 20% or so. We're already seeing particular models going for around £370 instead of £400 in a few places and as this 560 is incredibly fast, it's not that far behind in performance, which will put some serious price pressure on the 580. Bring on the price wars.

It isn't about them using cheap components, I'm sure they will use decent ones, but they could still overload them.

As for the GTX580 going down in price, I doubt it. Besides the fact that this card will be rare anyway, if a GTX560@950MHz is still 20% behind a GTX580, an extra 50MHz is not going to even come close to closing the gap. Not to mention this card will be very closed maxed out, and the stock GTX580 will still have a lot left in it overclocking wise.

Personally, I don't think this cards worth waiting for, and for the price you are looking to pay you might as well get a stock GTX570 or even a stock GTX470 and overclock those. Both would likely outperform this card when comparing overclocked to overclocked. I mean, I don't know what you are paying over the pond for this card, but over here it looks like it sells for about $270-280, while a GTX470 can be had for $260($210 with MIR), and an overclocked GTX470 would hand this card its ass.

I'm having my doubts that we'll ever see this card in the UK. Several shops have delisted it and Scan show it as available on 21st March.

It's a shame, as it looks like a really nice card.

NT: thanks for the info, but as I explained previously, it's not just about the frame rate. I'd rather have the later version of the GPU with the refinements, lower temps and lower noise, too.

If that was the case you'd be buying one of the other GTX560s instead of waiting for this card, or as I said a GTX570.

Your not getting a "refined" card.. just paying a premium for a higher binned chip.

Mm dont believe so, its the same as a stock 580 just clocked higher

Well it looks like the 1GHz clock was a bit ambitious and they couldn't get the yields, so the model has been discontinued before it ever went on sale.

But guess what? It's been replaced by a 950MHz version. Everything's the same apart from the slightly reduced clock speed.

And I've just ordered it from Novatech for £220. I'll be picking it up tomorrow.
