You think you can remove a surface mount soldered chip with a "heater"? You're either trolling this thread or extremely stupid. This is guaranteed to wreck the card.

RMA before you do something dumb and make yourself into a bigger fool then you already are.

If they dont take it, proceed to hit yourself in the face for being a dumbass and ruining a few hundred in perfectly fine electronics because you had to flex ur epeen and attempt to get an extra 10mhz of performance (which isnt noticeable 99.999% of the time)

The reason I have never flashed my GPU bios? because I am not that up on it and as such wouldn't dare risk bricking an $200 component in an instant.

Keep seeing these threads, omg I flashed my 580/5970 etc with a 9800gt/7900gt bios. If you are not competent in flashing gpu's then the simple answer is don't do it unless you have money to burn or at least practice with a POS old gpu until you have it down to a T!!

I do feel for you but like I said if you are unsure just don't touch it and you have nothing to worry about Sorry!

It's worse than that: the problem is that it's actually impossible to get this down to a T!

Flashing graphics cards is not an officially supported activity from the manufacturer, unlike mobos, which are. So, everything is an unknown variable and can behave unpredictably: different brands and models of card, different revisions of card, including the BIOS chip itself, different mobos and their interaction with the card, including different BIOS revisions... and the list goes on.

Because of all this, you always risk bricking your card, regardless of how familiar you are with doing this, so you better have a damned good reason for doing it.

I'd still like to know why the OP was trying to flash in the first place. Care to tell us?

I agree but at least know how NOT to flash the wrong bios, flashing the high end card with the stand in low end GPU bios seems like a school boy error to me and like I said could be avoided by making sure and double checking at least 5-10 times you know what you are doing.

To me all these threads seem they could have been avoided had the OP took their time and researched thoroughly and made sure 199% they where clear on what steps to take, though we do like to jump into things and as such this is the consequences.

This isn't a dig at the OP just a generalisation and I feel for anyone who bricks a $500 card, I would cry like a little baby girl for at least a month, non stop!!!

Yeah, all true. Most definitely a schoolboy error. Now, with the stakes so high when flashing, removing all expansion cards, other than the one graphics card is an easy, obvious and necessary precaution to take.

And yes, researching this before doing it is absolutely the right thing to do, especially with the inherent unpredictability of the hardware when attempting this.

I would guess a warranty return is out..... flashing a 580 with a 9800's Bios is hardly within the terms of warranty, is there no way the flash can be done within windows, it may be easier to determine the right card and it might actually be identified by windows where it isnt at boot.

That's if they can test for a corrupt BIOS, Tatty, which most places cannot. I reckon 99.9% of retailers, simply plug it in, see it's no go and issue a replacement card.

I guess that they get few enough of these returns, that it's not worth their while investing in the equipment and expertise to suss this out. Even if they did, the customer could simply accuse the retailer of making it up or breaking it themselves and the retailer couldn't prove it was sent in like this, making it a classic he said she said deadlock situation.

there used to be a way to jumper 2 pins on the bios chip and it would make it blank then force flash it to its bios google it i know it used to be able to be done.

My graphics card have a one year warranty and it does not matter much guarantee that I want to cancel or I use it for this case.

There is potentially a very easy fix,,

1. swap the 9800 and 580 in the slots they are in, so the 9800 is in the PCIe slot nbearest the cpu. This will then boot the system from the 9800, then force-flash the 580.
2. if the above dosent work then beg/borrow/buy a plain pci and force flash the 580.

I have miss-flashed a card before but it was with the modded bois for that card, but never with the bios from another card..

if you have to do a warranty ram, do-not mentioned you have been mucking about with flashing..

I want to flashing 9800GTX Because it was dead like 580 ! But I could save 9800, but GTX 580 not identified by the nvflash .

I had over 100 times I've done it but this time typing mistake occurred, I had bad chance at this Time .

I spoke with the warranty and they said within a week doing .

But bios chip is nice way

Various recommendations, opinions, etc. Then, you proceed to disregard all the info that is given to you and do your own smart ass trick. It's good that you got your point proven, but did you really need to come here to do all this?
I'd say you did a good job, you just showed it the wrong way.
As for the flash mistake, who in the world would flash a BIOS in a rush?
