I had my first cascade session today, so I thought I should share. It was my first time using a X48 board and DDR3 memory with LGA775. The results didn't turn out too bad, ~130 boints overall. This session also got me over 400 (global+HW) boint milestone :rockout:
I need to get used to the REX to figure out what settings help what, then maybe I can improve.

That would be a 2-stage phase change unit (aka. cascade). On wPrime 1024M, temps never got warmer than -106C. Although, C2Ds don't produce tons of heat. I'll have a C2Q (Q6600) under that cascade tomorrow :D

More like refrigerator parts ;)

Here's a frosty pic of the evap:

Nice cascade there:toast:

Thanks! Built by sdumper, I've always heard people say he builds good units, and they're right. His electrical wiring wasn't the best on my unit, but I don't have a problem with working on that stuff.

It's only called a cascade if it uses more than one stage. I usually see SS (single stage) and cascade (2+ stages). Benching is highly addictive, even though it doesn't seem like it would be.

i thort cascade was where you cool somthing that is also cooling somthing else...

so you would be cooling the CPU with say phase change 1, then you cool phase change 1 with phase change 2?

kinder like cooling your CPU with a TEC and then cooling the TEC with water.

EDIT: see post above :p

Yeah, you're right slyfox, that's a good description.

I'm not a phase expert by any means, but if I understand multi-stage phase correctly, there are 2+ gases used and one gets cold and condenses to cool the other gas to even colder temps than the first, and so on for as many stages as you have.

By cascade he means there is two stages of cooling vs a single stage "SS" unit. Here are one of each built by Scott...

The SS I built a small rack for the unit.

Nice rack for the SS! Simple and functional, I like it.

I plan on building some type of cart/rack for the cascade. That would make it easier to move around, have a shelf above the cascade for the PC, and have removable side panels with foam lining the inside in case I want to bring the beast indoors.

now all you need is an i7 sandy bridge, 5ghz air means you could get like 6-7ghz hopefully

-80C isn't bad at all :D
Dice is a little more involved as well.

SB doesn't like the cold too much. They can do 5.7-5.8GHz on ambient cooling (air/H2O). The highest SB CPUz validation has been 5.96GHz using LN2, but keeping temps around -40C.

Also, with the multipliers on SB going to 57-58 and the limited bclk overclockability (~100-105 or so), I think the highest we'll ever possibly see on SB will be 6.1GHz. Really, anywhere near 6GHz is extremely difficult on SB because the chips are the limiting factor not the temps or voltage. So, you need to be VERY lucky when buying a chip, or bin tons of CPUs until you find one.

so we'll be waiting for bulldozer if we want higher clocks then, still wonder what 24/7 cascade could do

Lol its not enough to push my old 550be up any higher :nutkick: had an old ss back in the day still regret selling that thing

Yeah, Bulldozer and LGA2011 should get higher clocks than SB. bclk overclocking will be back for LGA2011, which should help quite a bit. I don't know a lot about Bulldozer though.

...still wonder what 24/7 cascade could do

It could be loud and suck a lot of power...lol. SS would definitely be a better 24/7 solution, but I really don't know how high a cascade could get a CPU for a 24/7 OC.

Lol its not enough to push my old 550be up any higher :nutkick: had an old ss back in the day still regret selling that thing

Phase is so much easier. It's for the lazy bencher ;)
Don't have to worry about picking up DICE or LN2. You don't have to tend a pot during the session either, and you can focus on getting the clocks.
