Hey dudes.

40 mins, blue screen after playing BC2.

System_service_exception.

What would be causing this? my 6970 is pretty new, (2 weeks) I am also wondering what the BIOS options are?
Is one performance, and 1 standard? Maybe its set on performance, as If I turn the fan speed to 65% manually, it doesnt 'seem' to crash?

What's the temps on the GPU & CPU?

EDIT: Just saw your PSU in your specs it is not a strong PSU may not be enough for the 6970?
How many 12v rail does it got & how many amps on each?

If you have to turn the fan up to prevent it from crashing, obviously it's overheating.
Really don't think it takes a genius to figure that out or asking what his temps are...

Sounds like a bad GPU, so RMA it...

And the BIOS switch 1 & 2 doesn't mean performance enhancer/booster, it's just a dual BIOS switch for the 6xxx cards.

your case is made of wood? ( Treated Pine with Cypress edges ) hoe cramped is the videocard? ... like how small it is?

can we have a picture with side doors open?
are you using any fan to help get some air inside the case?

I just confirmed this. When I have th fan set to 60% manually it doesnt crash at all.
I just played about 1.5 hours BC2.
Case is timber, Ill get some pics tommorow.

Heaps of airflow. GPU sits on 59 celcius at adle with the automatic fan settings. I dont know what it is under load.
CPU is about 60 celcius at load.
CPU not related I dont think, as when I manually set the GPU fan speed, its all good.

sounds like heat related to me... kind of common sense here.. lol

59C is VERY high for idle.. My card idles at around 37C and under load jumps to around 72C..

If i was the OP.. I would use one of the various programs out there like GPU-Z,RealTemp,SpeedFan,etc and log your temp under load.I bet it hits 100C+ LOL.. Just call it a hunch

i agree if it crash on the same time usually related to heat or power and 50 some for idle is high it should be lower, check your airflow
btw have you tried to set the fan on max speed, maybe theres err on the fan

Its about 1 month old. Timber case nearly finished, still using this old banger. Here is the airflow situation.

It appears there are quite a few of these

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

wow lots-a-dust especially in power supply :p

at worse you can try and "log to file" option in gpu-z , game like normal and see when it append what was last things recorded ..

cause im baffled if your system doesn't BSOD when GPU fan is at 60% eeeeeever! but it hang when you do not touch anything i would definitely RMA my card cause this card can handle temp up to 85 ( never got hotter then this in my system)...

The card might be fine blazing away at 80c, maybe the power supply cant keep up with the demand??
Would that be a accurate assumption?

How would I not make it an assumption... without buying new PSU

I could be wrong in saying its NOT the PSU..but i dont believe it is

A) clean you PSU out with some compressed air before it really does need replacing:rolleyes:.. some 1 had good eyes.. ;).. dust will kill a PSU FAST...traps in heat. components get too hot..shortens their life and they will eventually fail..not if but when...
B)use GPU-Z and log it to file while playing games
C) still think your idle is way too high...IMO.. your idle needs to be atleast 10C cooler

I might only have a lowly 6800GT,but my idle temp rarely goes over 39C...fan is on full though.. zalman fan and no way to throttle it... not that I want to as I live in texas..

If it doesnt crash at 60% fan.. Just kick it up to 60%+ when playing games..problem solved IMO

550 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express power connector recommended.

That is taken from a sapphire HD 6970 video card off of newegg. You have a 500watt. Im going to guess that its temp related and you have an insufficient power supply.

you can always buy a power supply at futureshop or whatever store do refund and buy a 600 watts PSU test it and return it if not needed :p

Thanks guys.
Im not using any 3rd party software, except for GPU-Z. So insufficient PSU, would be causing the high temps?

Brandenburg: Thats what I have been doing, and although it is very easy to do, I still think there musy be something wrong for it to be that hot at stock speeds.

Its possible. Not to mention the inside of your case is quite dirty with all that dust. The PSU is probably putting out more than it should be trying to power just your video card along with the rest of the computer plus all that dust.

also he's using 4 pin hard drive to PCI-e connector a clear sign that power supply was not designed for high video card wattage..

i don't think its heat related... just weird coincidence?

Coincidence?... In this world.. their really is no such thing.. things happen for reason , even if that reason is not evident at the time.:banghead:

Sorry but i am not sure what the coincidence is? that I have a under rated PSU and the crashing?
If I manually set the fan speed to 60% it doesnt crash... I really dont understand.

coincidence is two thing happening lets say at same time but from unrelated cause.. those two thing append for a reason ... but it can be unrelated reason(S) ince the coincidence

just saying that his problem looks like a power supply problem but then it does not if he put fan at 60% he never crash ever... if he let fan on automatic he get a BSOD after 40 minute every single time..

like i said i would try a brand new PSU and if its not the PSU i would return the unit for refund and RMA my video card.
