USB as 24/7 Storage?

Basically I just bought a 32gb USB. I wish to use it to store all my songs etc. I have quite and bit and I only put games on my Vraptor and would like to keep my other HDD's as clean as possible. Is it safe to run the usb 24/7 with no damage to play my music?

I wouldn't see why not. I use 2 4GB USB flash drives for ReadyBoost and the prolly get accessed about as much as music files if not more.

I wouldn't keep the music, or anything, on a flash drive only. I see way to many of them die for no reason. What is the point of having hard drive if you are going to leave them empty anyways?

Running RAID 0 soon and I want to keep my HDD's Clean as possible.

Maybe once I RAID i'll put em on my hdd. but for now, I wouldn't mind running them off my usb, ALSO it's portable!

It wouldn't hurt to put them on the flash drive, but I'd keep anything on the flash drive backed up somewhere else.

if you only plan to use it in the short term (until you've done your raid setup) then you should be ok. I've got an 8gb flash drive from 4 years ago that still reads and writes just fine with no data loss *knocks on wood*

I wouldnt do it as a permanent set up. Flash drives can decay over time, and they do fail. At the very least make sure its backed up somewhere, like a data cd or dvd.

Just do what I do and get a WDC Green, of an appropriate size for you. I sprung for 2TB cause I wanted to be able to store whatever I wanted without ever having to worry about filling it up, and even that only cost $100.

In the system using the usb for 24/7 I have 4x1tb Caviar blacks, idk im just "paranoid" about putting shit on there until I buy RAID 0, which will hopefully be VERY SOON!

yes. with such low disk activity, temps will not build up at all. make sure windows is set to idle your drives after an hour or so, and you'll have no problems.

trust the man who has 11 external hard drives XD

Really? I've only seen drives that lasts forever. I lost one of my drives and found it in a puddle of mud 4 months later, fully funcional. It still works today.

i have dozens of flash drives, and i've seen them spontaneously burst into flame. its not the ram chips that go bad, its the damn controllers/power circuitry. flash drives are not safe as a primary storage medium.

(memory cards are a lot better, but they can still be corrupted/wear out from too many writes)
