My Maxtor onetouch4 750gb HD seems to be having problems

1:In windows it is refusing to let me access the drive, chk dsk refused to work and when i got it to run through another program (easus partition manager) it stopped after step 2 and didn't continue

2:in fedora however it works fine, however i was alarmed too see the airflow tempreture at 58'c, 5 minutes later it has climbed higher to 60, which is weird as its less then 20c in this room

Normally i would say that it is a broken temp sense, but the hard drive (box) is really warm

Anyone got any solutions for 1 (get it working in windows) or 2 (cool it down)

Just too compare my internal hard drive looks like this

anyway where you plug the usb connector. front panel or back panel? some external storage works better by using back panel connector
does appear on device manager?
for cooling down it, it depends to how hot it is. some just ok rely on heatsink. some need fan, but since you run branded external hdd just place it on roomy space with better airflow

the back panel, probably diffrent ports as well as its been happening for 2 weeks now and i've only got round to fixing it, the computer's been taken apart and rebuilt since then

try check it on device manager and try uninstall it first then recheck after reboot. does it works?
have you checked the cable or the connector too, it could be from that

my seagate HDD is screwed up as well. if it is plugged in i cannot post went from working fine to the next day, not.

bump

hard drive still not working

-Did you try windows search for new hardware?

-Chipset driver installed?

-You could also try/check in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management & see the status of your drives

If i think of something else ill let you know

I have a sort of a solution. take the hard drive out from the external enclosure and try to rig it up directly to your pc like you would a normal hard drive.

it could be that the controller on the enclosure has gone haywire but the hard drive still works. I had a similar thing happen to me with e 640Gb WD external drive. Controller went bad and the only thing i could do to get windows to recognise the device was to take the hard drive out and put it into my pc like a normal internal HDD.

If your pc recognises the hard drive and you can access it etc etc, it probably is the controller on the enclosure thats borked.

maybe speak to maxtor or spend £15-30 on a new external hdd enclosure

Yes

I think so, and everything else usb based works

looks normal

The external enclosure is a solid box so taking it apart would mean voiding the warranty, and i don't want to Rma it as its got so much stuff on it and the only way to get it off would be to launch it on ferdora and spend the next day or 2 waiting for it to copy over

might have to do just that...yea its painful an all but 2 days is a relatively short time imo...

if its come to that, i'll copy it over to another drive through fedora, irritating though, the sound quality in fedora is rubbish and i won't have enough music without spotify, you'd think they'd do better drivers really. lukily i've got this http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/sony_ta1130ta_113.html, an entire 41 transistors and it'll still beat most of the modern ones
