In terms of mass and surface area I think the setsuno wins.

Damn i thought the orochi was heavier but you are right, the susanoo is 1565g and the orochi is only 1285g.

If you OC to the point of needing something so heavy to cool your cpu, go with water :slap:

I agree but with one exception, passive usage but it looks like this was not aimed at being passive... just at being super massive

Strap a 20cm fan on it and run it at 700rpm, pretty much silent when inside a case.

There must be physical limit, based on the processor's heatspreader, that restricts how much heat can be extracted via a heat-pipe based heatsink?

I think its stupid, who would want that big stupid looking lump hanging off their board, im sure a corsair h50/70 would cool better anyway, and possibly be cheaper.

What's with Scythe and ridiculously big HSFs? I have a Mugen-2 and that's gigantic. Those are simply "Titanic." XD

I would be very weary about putting some thing that huge on my computers CPU / MB ! Man if you jarred , Bumped or moved your computer it could do some real damage ! Just look at that thing IT IS HUGE ! It may cool good and all but my goodness that thing could crack the MB , Pull the cpu out of socket ! Why would any one want to risk it ? Not to mention it looks stupid ! Why not just go with liquid cooling and not only reduce the risk of breaking your CPU or MB but get far better cooling ? What a HUGE eye sore !

Im very interested in your logic behind water cooling if you state moving your computer as concern for a heavy cooler not that is isn't a valid concern but water cooling is much more detrimental to transport of a machine.

it would seem that others in the thread regarded watercooling as an option over the huge scythes, not you but my question stands to those who consider that alternative

Dude I live in an RV 35' Bounder And mine moves around a lot ! I just could not imagine a HSF that huge on my system at all . With the bumps and Vibration And bouncing and pot holes I hit in this rig if I had that Humungous Hunk of crap hanging off my CPU I wouldn't have a working computer any more ! One bump and my MB would be gone ! :D

OH and Not once has there been any leaks in my setup ! And it takes a beating ! Trust me if you have never been in an RV take a trip in one and you will see just what I mean !

for me it isn't size but price/performance that makes the determining factor when deciding between cheap water and good air. I picked up my mugen2 for 25$, less than a new waterblock would have cost me for my water cooler so i run air. It does everythign I want it to and more. cpu idles low, loads low, and I haven't had an oc fail due to heat with it. (stupid x58 tempermental on every little settings change lol).

in this case I'd be more likly to go for a new waterblock. cheaper and better.

I mean I'm all for good air but 100$ for an aircooler is way past the limit. 50$ is my top limit for good air. after that you're better off with water cooling.

WOW... just wow

on an unrelated note:
@Trickson have you mounted the peltier between the cpu and block or are you using it to chill the liquid elsewhere in the loop? i.e away from the components to prevent condensation damage

Yes I use the TECH cooler in the winter time ( as it is cooler in the RV and helps heat up my rig ) and switch to the Regular WB in the summer time as it gets really hot in here and well the TEC adds so much heat to the rig that the AC units can not keep up LOL . Thing is the TEC WB is still far lighter than that huge HUNK of metal ! And it is also SMALLER there for confined to less space and able to take the beating this rig hands out .
