860 is a stronger CPU but i believe there are programs will benefit from extra memory bandwidth from the 1366 platform (but very few program will.)

From a heat, power consumption standpoint, the 860 would be a better choice, even though trading off triple channel will be a hit in performance. Really just depends on what your choice of cooling would be and when also paired with other components along with what's going to be powering them.

EDIT:

What I am saying is "better" can be construed in different ways. For example: Use your PC for media and need silence, pickup an i3+H57 1156 setup, they don't need the best cooling and are easy on the psu. Only you can determine what would be better for yourself.

I'd need to know what kind of stuff you'd be doing before doing any recommendations.

It will be paired with a 480 and cooled by a H50, used for gaming and every day stuff.

Either one would be fine, both would be great choices for gaming. I'd probably go with whatever is cheaper at the time.

From a strict gaming standpoint, 1366. As its a better motherboard and better ram.

After running many, many configurations for both platforms, I thought 1366 is better in terms of memory bandwith and overall feature set when it came to motherboards. However, it is more expensive (boards not chips), and you will rarely notice the memory bandwidth difference.

Do you mind explaining why you don't want to go SB? If you are spending anyways, it is a superior platform in terms of raw speed, lower power consumption etc. A 2500K won't cost you anymore than a 860, and there are plenty of excellent reasonably priced boards. I only mention it because after dozens of 1366 and 1156 configurations, I'm glad I moved to SB. It's just such a great platform, and the raw speed is just remarkable.

the differences between two setups are minimal unless what you do actually utilize the extra 2 Gigs of memory, but the 1366 setup has a better resell value. if you have to let go one let go the 1366 setup, and 860 perform a little bit better than 920 gaming, due to its much higher uncore multi.

Also more pci-express lanes on the x58 motherboard, if you have a high-end gfx card.

He already has the 920 and doesn't want to spend. 920 was phased out for the higher clocked 9xx series.

Performance wise, the two setups are similar but 1366 has more features and is what I use.

I say keep the 1156 setup and sell the 1366 setup for more money. You likely won't notice the difference between the two, so you might as well get as much money as you can now.

There is one thing the 1156 does not have and never will have: Six core CPUs.

There is your difference that is the decision maker. Everything else is splitting hairs.

Wait for 8 core CPUs, 6 cores are underutilized and when apps do take advantage of them regularly, 8 core CPUs will be out.

Enjoy the 920 in the interim.

Stick with the 1366....You can pick up a 6 core processor later cheap.

No need to do anything else as most programs dont use half of what you have now.

Yeah i think in the end you can sell both and get an 1155/p67 rig for less than you'll recoup from the sale. The rest you can toss into another area of the rig or just buy games with.
