Current system is a Q6600 on a 780i board(out for rma). I think i am ready to upgrade, My friend gave me a GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7.But with BD and ivy right around the corner, should i just wait and build one of them or buy a i7 940/960 and DDR3 for the Gigabyte?
Also how much do you think i could get for a Q6600+780i(Evga-A1 board) +2x2GB 1066 or even maybe trade for a lower end i7?

Also keep in mind i like my systems to run for 4 Years before i rebuild :p

Ivy is still a fair way to go.... end of this year.

best option is to pick up a 2nd hand i5..... or go all out for a sandy bridge IMO.

I'm not sure how much you'd want to invest into a 1366 setup given that there are some interesting things coming. Refer to the following thread to see the most recent Intel roadmap:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=144408&highlight=x79

Given that Bulldozer is coming this month, and enthusiast class sandybridge is coming in quarter 4, you may want to deal with what you've got for now (for the next two to four months) and invest into something that will still be viable for updates in 6 months.

Ivybridge is first quarter 2012. It's a huge wait, and even with the supposed improvements (3d transistor structure) waiting that long gets you into the perpetual waiting for technology loop.

If you've got 0 patience then go for the 1366. It may not perform as well as sandy bridge, but it actually supports more (peripherals, ram, and SATA). The ram can be reused later (ddr3 is ddr3).

You do have take in consideration that socket 1366 is pretty old (2-3 years?) and will consume alot of power compared to sandy or even upcoming ivy maybe. Id sell the board while its still worth something and wait

well although the 1366 is getting older it still preforms well. the x58 will allow crossfire or sli depending on the cards you choose. although the i7 is getting older so was your Q6600 but is there anything that it stresses out with ATM?

u will notice most improvement if you go with sandy bridge because of high overclocking potential, plus mb should be compatable with ivy bridge which makes it a good upgrade path, 1366 is still great and offers plenty of features

Cool ty dom, For some reason i was thinking the 2011 was ivy so this whole time when i was saying ivy i was referring to the 2011. 2011 will be a sandy with sandy die shrink aka ivy?

Intel Core i7-960 Bloomfield 3.2GHz 4 x 256KB L2 C... I7 960
G.SKILL PI 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1... I think good ram
I will wait for BD and see what guys here do with them before buying these, if BD is good might try out a AMd chip, i will have $1000 for my new build. Also i don't mind waiting as LDNL said i7 is getting old! and i would only save the cost of a board.

This is a solid setup. I have that memory and the 950.

ivy will be a 22nm. but i think the 2011 will be the 1366 of the sandy/ivy.

Also If i don't us the gigabyte ud7 i can not sell this, as Flickerboot is the true owner of the board.. So he would have to be the seller as it was a gift to me if i want it.

I want to clear up the board. It is actually a spare I have sitting on my shelf to hold over a system during RMA if ever needed. Though I am friendly so I handed it to dbiggs to use for however long he needed so it wouldn't just collect dust.

1366 all the way :D

I would just get a 950 and OC it to 4.2GHz. Great quad core and can easily be OC'd. Also shops like micro center sell it for $199 and less. I got mine for $199 in February. The 960 is a pointless chip right now. You might as well go down to a 950 or even a 920.

It OC's like nobody's business.

200 BClk, 21 Multi, easy 4.2 on air. With almost stock voltages depending on memory. Then it is just a QPI bump, keeping it within .5v of DIMM. :rockout:

Oh no doubt. I had my 950 at 4.2 on air before I installed the H70. It's an easy OC usually. I've only seen a couple chips that were flaky at 200MHz bclk. Other than that... no problems.
