Cooling the cpu down/heat issue!

I've been running my updated system now for about 3 months now, and the system has been performing pretty well, but i have noticed a few "issues" which i think is down to the cooling side of the pc.
Now when just using the pc for general stuff the pc is humming away quite nicely,but recently after playing BFBC2 the cpu fan (i think it's that!) sounds like it should belong to a under carriage of a 747 taking off from heathrow!

I checked out the temp settings in the bios just after playing said game (which is very cpu hungry by all accounts ) and the CPU was showing a temperature of (43*C/109*F) And the motherboard coming in at (32*C/89.5*F) god knows what they were hitting during the game, is this quite normal??

Also last night, which was a very warm night (And i did not check the temperature settings in the bios but my room was about 75-80*F at 10PM!)) the cpu fan was spinning quite loudly,so much when i was webcasting my viewers could quite clearly hear the fans humming away in a loud fashion, something they have never heard before which was kind of indicating that the pc was strugging with the heat.


So it's making me think that my current pc set up is good, but seems to be struggling in a warm/hot enviroment, in my previous last thread when i was asking about the stuff i was going to buy (which i now have) i was told that the stock cpu fan that comes with the amd phenom x4 965 BE is good, but will get quite warm and a investment in better cooling would be a good idea ,the following was fans were suggested-

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler Heatsink

And

Corsair Hydro H50-1 High-Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

Now are these 2 fans anygood? And will the cool the cpu down nicely? And will it not make my pc sound like rolls-royce jet engine? I dont want to OC the pc,but i do want a nice stable and cool cpu,instead of a boiling hot cpu with a stock fan,will these fans both do the job and have they got any pro's and con's?

43'c is actually a decent temp for a CPU to run at. No need to start to worry until you get around the 70'c mark. Since you say your CPU is only at 43'c, I'm thinking the fan sound your hearing is coming from your video card. BFBC2 would work the hell out of a GTS250.

these phenoms can be out by up to 15'c, and i'm guessing since he lives in the UK, he's seen temps go up by about 10'c in a week (we're past 30 now), i used to be ok with my stock cooler until today when my CPU ht 65'c and 6000rpm in BFBC2, my GTS 250 hit 95'c today in BC2 when it normally does 80

(Our rigs are scarily similar, 4 core phenom GTS 250, stock AMD cooler, same PSU and i think you can guess what hard drive is being delivered tommorow)

both are good, 212+ is amazing price/perf (i'm getting one next week when their back in stock in scan) and h50 is quite and powerfull

OVERALL: Down clock a couple of 100mhz until the whether is over or you've got a new heatsink

Those temps seem absolutely fine to me, even for an AMD chip. I wouldn't really worry at all unless you start hitting high 70's.

Temperatures drop dramatically in the blink of an eye once the load is removed from a processor. If you want to see an actual loaded temperature to go by, install Prime95/OCCT/Intel Burn Test (one of these, don't really matter) and get CoreTemp/AIDA64/motherboard software to give you a temperature after one of the above applications run for, oh, 10-30 minutes.

check if the sensor too, it may report lower than actual temp.
usually sound related to dry fins or the bearing
does it sound after several minutes repeatly. if yes could be your fan not the processor, processor will be fine under these temp

the "stock" AMD cooler shouldnt sound that loud even on full tilt... from your description it sounds more likely to be coming from your Graphics card fan... those are notoriously loud

unless he has one of those with the "thick" 92mm fan

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies,i've never really thought about the fan on the graphics card being noisey,but when the noise happens,i've always thought it was comming from the cpu fan,anyway i'll have a look at the software programmes later for the temperature to see what the cpu and mobo are running at.

I did have a bit of a clean last night getting all the crud and dust from out of the fans and i forgot to mention though, when i was using my pc yesterday dinnertime (and it was pretty warm) i had a very loud audiable beep comming from the speaker on the motherboard, does anyone think this might be related also last thursday (yet another very hot day) my pc decided to bluescreen but it rebooted itself before i had a chance to see what the cause of it was!

I doubt a phenom II stock cooler sounds like a 747 at take off... only stock cooler that comes close to sounding like that is a graphics card cooler on full tilt. mine sounds like a bloody hairdryer when it cranks up!

You say that there was "crud" in the fans/heatsinks... this is likely to be the issue as this will decrease the heatsinks effectiveness and coupled with the hot weather we have in UK now will cause overheating im sure. Get a can of compressed air to blast it out.

What temperature monitoring software are you using, does you motherboard have ASUS probe as this will display temperature warnings in windows and make beeping sounds through your speakers if thresholds are reached.

Most importantly, you need to read the temperature values when the machine is under load as this will differ greatly from idle temps.

(also listen if the cpu fan when loaded makes the loud noise you were explaining).

Phenom iis thermal limit is 65c so until you get into the 50c range don't worry

I think i am being a total noob right now, i've got both of those applications running but i am not too sure if iam doing it correctly, i've got the core temp running and also doing the "torture" test, how long should i be doing this for,it's been roughly half an hour now!

Just a few minutes of a torture test will give you an idea of what your peak temps are. No real life application will make them go as high as a torture test like prime95 though.

Well this screenshot was taken in the midst of the test which was ran for a hour and 24 minutes, which gave me no errors or warnings.

I am starting to think now it is indded the fan of the gfx at fault not the cpu fan!

Are you sure it was a torture test? I only see your load hitting 35% on one core. What test are you running exactly?

I thought it was a torture test, i selected it in the menu, well i thought so it came up with loads of 1-12 steps on various things...

you need to run a torture test... open prime95, then go to options, torture test and hit OK in the pop up window.

then watch the temps climb in coretemp... prime95 will max out each core at 100% which will raise the temps to their max while the program is running... if you stop the torture test then the temperature will drop quickly, so you need to take the screenshot during the test to get the correct reading
