USB and ATI issue

Now I fixed this problem but I wanted to give any other early adopters of this board and or someone who updates their video drivers a lot a heads up.

This morning I uninstalled my 11.6 drivers so that I could update to the 11.6b hotfix. I did the normal uninstall with the control panel and such. Everything went smooth. However when I rebooted my OS did not pick up my keyboard and mouse. Strange. So I rebooted again. Same thing. Apparently when I unintsalled the drivers it did something to the USB filter as well. Never had this happen on my old board.

So I busted out the old P2 keyboard and installed the new drivers that way. Restarted. STILL SAME ISSUE. A little bit of panic and pissed set in. Last resort which I was dreading was to reboot using the OS disk and use a restore point. Ran the restore back to before the uninstall and everything worked fine. I updated the drivers without uninstalling and all is well.

Now this could be a few things.

1. The new unintsall in the ATI drivers are buggy.
2. Ghostbuster removed something in the OS that messed up the USB filter.
3. The Crosshair V has a bios issue when the USB filter is removed and replaced.

I am leaning toward 2 but it could be any of them.

Hmmm. Sys restore back to earlier, then try being more selective with GhostBuster?

I noticed my USB 3.0 ports not working yesterday, and this is a fresh OS. I found unknown device in device manager, and simply had Windows self-update to get things working again.

Weird. Not many people use GhostBuster though, I think we may be the only ones at this point.

I use ghostbuster in safe mode admin cause I'm dangerous like that.

I had this exact same problem back on the cat 9.6's.Pulled my hair out for a couple weeks googling & trying different things to no avail. :mad:

Any time i tried doing anything with the cat's i would lose all USB.
I was stuck using the 9.6's until a OS re-install when the 11's came out.The problem has never resurfaced.

Like to add that this problem only showed up on my TA 790GX board and none of my other machines????And i do all my updating on the same day when new cats come out.

What the heck is ghostbuster and why did you use it? If it messed your O/S up, reinstall that you lucky guy. Anyways, go download the SB driver and install it. It should fix the problem.

It was recommended to me by an Eskimo lover. Its running now. Just dont wanna uninstall it again lol

Until there is a fix with the bios, don't use express uninstall all in the AMD CP when reinstalling drivers. Choose 'custom' and don't select the USB filter/SB driver.

Good idea. Now I remember why I stick around here.

The thing was the bios read the keyboard and mouse fine. Its when the OS started they turned off.

Ghostbuster removes ghosted devices from windows, so all those things you attached that still have drivers that load and cause strange issues, you can get rid of them. I have used the program for a long time and never had a issue, since it will not allow you to really delete a in use driver all your boot time and required ones stay put. Plus you can remove the rest of programs like AVG that leave their interface driver installed.

So what do you think caused the issue? Bios conflict?

Deleting a southbridge driver during your uninstall as I have done the same with the AHCI drivers causing a BSOD during reboot.

Or you deleted the ghost version that the system would have fallen back to after you uninstalled the current version, causing the system to be confused and angry like a toddler.

Very good point. So anything USB oriented in Ghostbuster I should not remove I'm guessing?

Anything "Ghostbuster" related you shouldn't use. Your technical level is better than that.

Well normally I would just use driver sweeper in safe mode the tried and true method but it was suggested to me this was better. Live and learn.

Ghostbuster is a good tool, and only that a good tool.

I use it as I am always beating up my personal rig to test others hardware and software.

It is OK to use to remove specific devices but not all of them at once.

You can also get the same effect by use of environment variables and showing hidden devices.

It doesn't remove registry entries for installed and active devices? It's purely to be used for devices that have been removed, not to remove drivers like you do driver sweeper. This thread is the perfect example not of how the program failed, but how it was used improperly.
