Hi guys, i have a problem.

I'm a high school physics teacher and one of the investigations that i like to use is based on a java program embedded in a web page.
I would like to back up this web page for if it were ever taken down but, i have had no luck so far. Specifically i would just like the java apps, but the whole page would be more convinent. Nothing i have tried works.

The first thing i tried was just to save the web-site using the browser, but it does not save the java apps, then i have tried web-site grabbers but i can't get any of those to work either.

The specific web page is: http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...320005/simulations6e/index.htm?newwindow=true

Does anyone have any ideas? I would hate to have to re-write a whole investigation if i could no longer get access to the site.

Thanks.

I don't really need a web server, i just need a local copy that i can give the students, and it is only for 1 of the simulations. The mirrors and lenses one. I downloaded one of the Jar files but i'm not sure how to open it. I have java on my comp afaik, but when i try to open any of the jar files i get a "failed to load class attribute manifest" error.

Doe anyone know what this means?

AFAIK a jar is similar to a zip file so you should be able to open it with a program like 7z, or you could rename it with the zip extension and open it with Windows.

Best to ask the owner of the code for it.

I havent looked at the code, but I suspect that there's calls in there for stuff thats not integrated into the jars to prevent such things, calls to some server-side stuff for instance that you do not have access to.

Best to ask the owner of the code for it.

I understand it would be polite to ask the owner for permission to download it, but i think it would be a bit of a hassle for the owner to find the specific java applet i need. If i could just grab it myself it would save the inconvenience.

I haven't been able to find the author so far, but i don't see that is should be an issue. It's just a small lens/mirror sim, nothing complicated, and i'm using it for educational purposes in a small class. There are other downloadable programs available that i could use, but they are often bulky, containing many different sims, and difficult to use. I would probably have to write a full manual for some of the other (non web based) sims i have found.

I havent looked at the code, but I suspect that there's calls in there for stuff thats not integrated into the jars to prevent such things, calls to some server-side stuff for instance that you do not have access to.

ahh, i can't pretend to understand how such things work. i assumed it was self contained like java games and such. If it's too complicated to get, then i might as well just re-write the investigation in they were ever to take the sims down.

Nah, everythings there. It's all exposed. Now whether or not it's legal . . . that's debatable. If anyone asks it was some other really attractive guy with insomnia. :D

I just got it running for the hell of it.

Download all of this crap (right click->save linked content as) and mimic the directory structure:
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy/college/halliday/0471320005/simulations6e/applets/sim41.htm
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...005/simulations6e/applets/lib/wileycommon.jar
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...0005/simulations6e/applets/lib/wileySim41.jar
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...tions6e/applets/media/pictures/n_radiobtn.gif
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...mulations6e/applets/media/pictures/s41_bg.gif
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...ons6e/applets/media/pictures/studentnotes.gif
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...imulations6e/applets/media/sounds/intro41.swf
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...lations6e/applets/media/pictures/selftest.gif
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...005/simulations6e/applets/scripts/app_func.js
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...320005/simulations6e/applets/tests/test41.htm
http://higheredbcs.wiley.com/legacy...320005/simulations6e/applets/notes/note41.htm

If you do it right you should have a directory structure like so:
Code:
Mirrors and lenses\lib
Mirrors and lenses\media
Mirrors and lenses\scripts
Mirrors and lenses\sim41.htm
Mirrors and lenses\lib\wileycommon.jar
Mirrors and lenses\lib\wileySim41.jar
Mirrors and lenses\media\pictures
Mirrors and lenses\media\sounds
Mirrors and lenses\media\pictures\n_radiobtn.gif
Mirrors and lenses\media\pictures\s41_bg.gif
Mirrors and lenses\media\pictures\selftest.gif
Mirrors and lenses\media\pictures\studentnotes.gif
Mirrors and lenses\media\sounds\intro41.swf
Mirrors and lenses\notes\note41.htm
Mirrors and lenses\scripts\app_func.js
Mirrors and lenses\tests\test41.htm
Then run sim41.htm in IE (it didn't work for me in Opera).
