I'm replacing my dead LGA775 system and want feedback on the parts I have lined up for a budget Core i3 upgrade. I'm looking at the Core i3 2100, Asus P8P67 LE Rev 3 and 2x2GB Corsair Vengeance.

Any thoughts on those components?

why not go cheaper with an H67? P67 is only really needed if you overclock. :)

Correct, that part does not have turbo, fastest attainable would be ~3.4ghz with a bclk bump to 113Mhz (but would need a better board). Just confirming your statement cheesy!

Well then....

Thats just disappointing isn't it. I forgot about that.
Given the horrible state of intel hardware for the enthusiast I still suggest good mainboard and ram and the most tight-arse cheap CPU you can buy for the platform then get one of those shiny K-Series when money permits.

Is it just the CPU`s with the "i" moniker that will not be pushed?
Can you buy a low cache Celeron and smash volts and "frontside bus" or "HTT" or "QPI"
or whatever the hell that the sorry arsed hardware permits to make it growl. how the hell can consumers still be "enthused" about dirt cheap easy-peasy non configurable lego hardware or is it all about obsessive compulsive cable management now </rant>

Maybe look at AMD in your budget you will probably get a machine just as if not more powerful and at least you can manipulate the settings to get more performance.

Wait until the middle/end of September (if you can) and you can buy my CPU, board, and RAM for cheap. In specs.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Socket AM3 3.2 ...

Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 AM3 7.1 Channel HD Audio ATX...

Little cheaper but a much better board. Also pair that dark knight, it's a good cooler for AMD chips as well.

I fail to see any reason to go Phenom II anymore for gaming, the 2100 matches and beats the Phenom II in most games, costs similarly, does not need to overclock, all with lower power consumption (always great for summer). Pre SandyBridge Phenom II x4 was a great choice, but right now its hard to justify Phenom II unless you need lots of CPU power and that is firmly in the x6 territory.

Ok? Links were chosen due to motherboard which is much better. But taking your thoughts into consideration, prove to me that AMD can't game as good if not better. ok I sounded fanboyish but please prove to me that board isn't top notch over the Asus h6x in the OP.

the board is top notch and it allows the jump to bulldozer,

id suggest grabbing a Cheap Athlon II x3 440 or 445 or 450 and trying your luck unlocking

its a $70 cpu with a damn good board and just grab Bulldozer when it comes out,

the X3 is still an improvement over the Core 2 Duo in games, and in general Bulldozers release in september, so it would be a short wait but long enough to save up and get a good chip

BFBC2, probably the most CPU demanding game out there, just barely edge the 2100. Another will be Metro 2033, but given that these highly demanding games are few and far between (for the forseable future), unless OP plays them exclusively (or spend most of the time there), I don't see why you should pick the 955 over the 2100.

Motherboards come after CPU choice, while your board is better there are also UD3 P67/H61/Z68 variants, so it does not matter too much.

Like you, I want to believe in AMD, but its a bit hard given Sandy Bridge's performance.

I still don't see what's so great about the loewer end sandy bridge, for low mid end gaming amd has them beat.

Now if the CPU in question was an i5 2k I would say hats off to you.
