you think it's possible to host a multiplayer gameserver on a box like this or is it far too underpowered for modern FPS gameservers?

I'm looking for a NAS for my business and personal files and came across this which could tick both boxes ... Any thoughts from the experienced would be helpful

I have a fast fibreoptic connection into my house so bandwidth isnt an issue.
Its possible to add up to 8Gb ram... and its got a dual core CPU albeit a "slow" 1.3ghz one.

it really depends on the games you want to host. counterstike would be fine, bf2 wouldnt happen nor minecraft,

yeah it would be in the region of BF2 type games... i was thinking that processing power would be an issue which is a pity.

what would be your reccomended minimum spec for hosting BF2 type games?
1.3ghz dual core with 4gb ram shouldnt be that bad surely?

if it is filled with 64 players then it will lag that proc badly. if you want dual core proc then it has to be at least 3 ghz, like a wolfdale.

I am nearly ready to pull the trigger and buy one of these.
I could build a small server but it would cost way more.
This is £236.99 and you get £100 cash back! I couldnt build something for that price over here with the same functionality.
The main purpose of this really is to act as a NAS, the gameserver functionality is just a bonus really

I would only be interested in hosting a 32 player server for something like COD4/5 or BFBC2 so hopefully it would be up to the task... what do you think?

some NAS don't give you access to the backend to install your own software so you should look into that before you buy if you want to host games.

yes, but this isnt a NAS, its just a small PC/Server ... i need to install my own software on it for it to work

I think a 1.3Ghz dual core is not going to be a very good game server for 32 people.
At all.

But hey, I could be wrong.

thanks guys... i diddnt think so either so i asked the question... but at the end of the day that box should be a decent enough NAS/media server so its all good.... i think ill pull the trigger and get it

Yeah, I think it would be fine for file serving, but for a game server you will want a quad CPU mobo with 4 Xeon quads at 3+ GHz and at least 64GB of RAM.

just kidding ... that's what I want. A good quad with sufficient RAM should handle 32 players in a reasonable fashion (unless the game is a bandwith eater like minecraft, in which case you're gonna need a Terabit internet connection. lol).
