If you want one of your threads closed, report it and ask.
We, however, make the determination to close it or not depending on why you asked.

Otherwise, as MM said, threads stay open forever. If you try to post to a really old thread it will warn you that it's really old, but you will still have the option to make it a zombie thread (resurrect it).

I would like what I saw on some forums that you could mark a thread as SOLVED and therefore it closes automatically and the title is marked with SOLVED.

Allowing the threads to stay open mean that more information can be accumulated in a single thread about similar problems giving people more troubleshooting information and options all in one place.

Just my opinion. :)

Also the "nvm solved"-issue gets resolved this way. How many times did you google an obscure problem you probably never heard of, find ONE thread about this exact issue, and the second post reads "nevermind, solved it".

If I see a "nvm solved", I usually ask the poster to add what he/she did to solve the problem, even if it was just something they overlooked.
I also will take the time to thank people (both with the thanks button and a verbal kudos) for posting what fixed their problem so others can benefit from their experience.

It probably wouldn't hurt if more members let people who figure out their own problems know that when they post the solution it is greatly appreiciated.

OK, then the SOLVED mark would there but the thread wouldn't close itself, in case the asker didn't bother to post the solution as you indicated :)
