Today we release an updated Beta revision of Afterburner, this application successfully secured the leading position on graphics card utilities. We're happy to see MSI Afterburner is leading the overclock applications. MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 8 is ready.
There's quite an extensive change list too, including things like faster startup and unlocking of additional hidden video capture formats. Go get it here.

Just for those wondering:

Change list:

  • Improved MSI On-Screen Display server v4.2.3:
  • Improved video frames timestamping approach may improve smoothness of videos captured on low framerates
  • Improved RTV1 codec provides better compression ratio (significantly better under certain conditions) without affecting the image quality and encoding performance
  • Added alternate RTV1 compression mode providing 1.5x - 2x better realtime compression performance at the cost of some minor image quality loss. Video quality slider is now unlocked for RTV1 format, 100% quality selects original compression mode whilst any other value selects new high performance compression mode
  • Now MSI Afterburner displays captured video file time, size, per-frame compression ratio and time in the On-Screen Display next to the video capture progress indicator
  • Now multithreaded video capture optimization is forcibly disabled by default on single core CPUs
  • Kernel mode RTCore driver has been upgraded to v1.6. New driver introduces RivaTuner-styled experimental protected MMIO IOCTLs and removes outdated IOCTLs dedicated for some old and currently abandoned RTCore technology based applications (HIS iTurbo and RMClock)
  • Now MSI Afterburner starts significantly faster than before due to optimized I2C devices scanning, cached database access and optimized GPU context switching in profile load routine
  • Fixed RTV1 codec installation issue on 64-bit systems
  • Now power users may unlock additional hidden video capture formats via the configuration file
  • Now screenshot and video capture quality can be adjusted with precise 1% steps instead of 5% steps in the previous version
  • Now video capture framerate can be adjusted in [1 FPS; 100 FPS] range with precise 1 FPS steps instead of [25 FPS; 100 FPS] range
  • Added Polish localization

MSI Afterburner is total crap. It doesn't apply profiles even though i've set it to do so, profiles don't save different fan speeds, they don't save different fan speed methods, nothing. Useless.

So, instead of just bashing it, how about offering some alternatives?

That would drive me nuts too. Why don't you take the new one for a spin and see if these things are fixed?

I've tried the beta few days ago and it was exactly the same thing. I'm not gonna even bother this time...

As for the alternatives, there aren't any. There used to be great ATiTool and ATi Tray Tools (ATT) but they are both sort of outdated or they don't offer features needed. ATT does have most of stuff and works right, but it doesn't have fan speed curve. You can only use Auto or fixed value.

I think you're making a mistake, RejZoR. There's clearly a lot of work gone into this, which will make a significant difference and hell man, it's free! :toast:

I'm going to go ahead and guess that you'll be in a minority - Afterburner is one of the first programs I install when reinstalling Windows or building a new gaming PC for a friend. I don't necessarily use it for overclocking, but as an all-round tool it's very useful (lots of monitoring, plus screen and video capture). The fact that it's an overclocking tool as well is just a bonus!

You know that you've got to edit MSIAfterburner.cfg in note pad , right?

1. Go to installed directory of MSI Afterburner, default: C:\Program file\MSI Afterburner
2. Use notepad to edit “MSIAfterburner.cfg”
3. Change the parameter of “EnableUnofficialOverclocking” from “0” to “1”

But i don't like anything MSI in general so i use Trixx from Sapphire i like it better ;)

Those are two different things. The plane is the Icon for the app, if you don't want the temp to read, turn it off.

I know that that those are two different things. Though they could be gone by simply using one icon in tray when showing temperatures in tray is "on"
I want temps, I dont want plane. Why would anyone want the plane icon when temps are already there... speedfan understand this

In case you didn't know, Everest/AIDA64 and some other programs are like that as well, so why is that bad? I got used to it, doesn't bother me.
Why is that bad? Because once you set MSI afterburner you very seldom want to go in to options. But to see temperature history and fan speed and stuff like that... that you want much more often. So having on click - options, is IMO terrible idea.
The worst is that I am unable to get to main window from options, only cancel. So you have to keep airplane icon at hand anyway.
But if it would be other way around, options are only one click away from the main window! I love MSI afterburner and speedfan to make my PC beautifully quiet and monitored, but this just irritates me to no end...

In terms of image, I agree, but for some reason I can't get afterburner to record sound. Maybe it's not supported and I'm not aware. meh.

You just have to enable the option in the settings to capture sound and select the source.
In terms of image quality and frame rate i personally think its better than Fraps.

I had a problem with a previous beta not recording sound but i just used a more up to date beta and it worked fine, works fine on this one too.

Trust me ppl, i know what i'm doing, it's the program thats totally broken.
It shares the same bad design as RivaTuner. Half of the stuff could be done miles better but developer feels like he knows it better... Only good thing about it is that it works with AMD and NVIDIA stuff. When it comes to doing things right, ATiTool and ATi Tray Tools were so much better, too bad they aren't developed as actively (or not at all).
