my $2...

Stick with the HDD. $124 will get you at most a rather crap 80Gb SSD which loads of people are complaining about high failure rates (newegg)

I think that Laptops with HDDs should be banned :)
No.. Seriously.. 2.5" HDD is the main bottleneck causing laptops to be so miserable (comparing to desktops) in everyday Windows use.

$125 is pretty low for SSD, but you should be able to get 60 or 80 GB one.
If the small storage size doesn't bother you, by all means get one !

Note one thing though: All Sandforce 2k-series (Sata 6.0Gbps) SSDs have serious issues with Intel RST controllers (depends on PC... yours may work well, but you never know)
For laptop, I would go for earlier generation SSD instead (like OCZ Vertex 2), they don't have these problems.
Unless you buy from place you know will accept return.

Cheers

I heard it was more like Sandforce 2k has issues with Marvell controllers. for the better part. ive not seeing nothing overly negative asside from that.

120Gb Corsair Force 3 SSDs and OCZ Agility 3 suffered instability issues with their first batch or so - Corsair done a global recall and OCZ just sat there denying everything on their forums (apparently) However. Most Force 3 and Agility 3 issues should have been fixed 3 months ago with the new batches.

Yeah it looks like I might have to spend a little more on an SSD. What would be the best 120gb or bigger ssd under $200?

I am not really looking for the fastest drive out there, just something that has a decent amount of storage, is faster than a hdd, and will allow me to get a little more batter life.

I would like to go with that one. But right at $197 on newegg its kind of pushing my budget. Can These be found for cheaper?

I could settle for a 64gb one at $100 but I would prefer at least 100gb. It wouldnt be the end of the world as I dont keep that much data on my laptop. I have a PC with 1tb hdd and an HTPC with 4.3tb of storage space. Mainly just keep documents on the laptop.

Only game I play on my laptop is starcraft 2.

$197 is about the cheapest your going to get for a SATAIII 120gb SSD

If you don't nered complete blazing fast SSD speeds and would like more storage for the price, consider a Momentus XT.

Ill look into it however I try to stay away from seagate products.

Also I am not even sure if my laptop is sata II or sata III. It is a i5 sandybridge cpu that doesnt mean it has sata III.

i would assume so. if its a second gen i5 CPU it should be SATA III. yeah the Crucial 64gb performs the same, just be sure to update the firmware to boost the speeds by like 20%

at some point i want 2 of them for Raid0 in my rig

Ok i might look into it in the next month. I would pull one of those OCZ vertex out of my main rig but 30gb is just not enough space for a fullsize laptop.

So I just cracked open the bottom of laptop and noticed it had an empty msata port. I had a 40gb intel msata ssd. I popped it in and it reads it just fine.

Do you think using this as a boot drive and a HDD as a storage drive would be a good move?

Of course it would be a good move.
It didn't even know that some laptops have space for both 2.5" and msata.

Does you laptop support "Smart Response Technology" ? That's also an option.

S.R.T is only available for z68 desktop chipsets.
