Upgrade for an integrated graphics

Looking for some recommendations, PC is an HP, has an open PCIe x16 slot, PSU unfortunately is only 300 watts, unsure if there is a 6/8 plug. Video is currently an integrated NV 9100. User is smart, but never done a hardware upgrade of any sort before, so I'll be coaching from 1600 miles away. Anyway looking for some possible choices. Thanks.

how bout you just cut to the chase and give us the model number of that particular HP unit so we can look it up.

There are many factors to think about when upgrading a premade unit. stuff like size restrictions, The case might not be able to fit a full size PSU in there.

300watts really limits your options, so if you choose to upgrade - you need to get rid of that.

What do you intend to use the PC for?? light gaming & 1080p movies?? you could try sticking a low end passive graphics card in there and see if the PSU will handle it but chances are it wont be any good for gaming.

If it is something like this then the chassis can take ATX PSUs, but only short ones (120mm fan, like the corsair cx series), has space for 2 HDDs and, with proper cable-management, could fit a card with more or less the length of the HD 6870 inside it. The cooling system is kinda poor. I guess a 92mm tower cooler could be fitted in there, but it's a long shot. I usually buy a better fan for the top-down type cooler and replace the TIM.
It's tricky to upgrade HP pre-builds and FreedomEclipse is right, you do need all the information on it to make the right choices.
If the plan is to stick with the original PSU, a HD 6670 would be the top choice, although I think a 400w is what is recommended for that card, if my memory serves me right. The 300w PSUs that come with HP pre-builts don't have 6/8-pin power connectors.

For sure
Radeon 5670 / 6670 / Nvidia 240 / 440 no external power required will run games on low settings

Maybe will work
Radeon 5770 / 6670 / Nvidia 250 /450 /550 Will require an extremal power plug (med gaming)

Best option (of course depending on your CPU) (Med to High)
New Quality PSU &
Radeon 6870 / Nvidia 460 / 560

But really a model # would be a good idea because if you have a older CPU then I would build a whole new rig

just get a gtx240 or something i like that, i have one and is does moh(2010,2011?) on ultra 1080p 1080p streams no prob , no 6pin pci-e connector also

If it is a pavilion tower and not a media center, then that is a good idea, given that the boards inside are microATX.

It would definitely be good to know the model number. If it's a standard ATX tower, then you could easily upgrade your power supply and get a high-performance card. If it's a non-standard tower, or slim tower, then you may actually have to a buy a low profile card.

Large companies tend to build their towers right down to the wire. I seriously doubt that any GPU upgrade will be safe with the stock PSU. The PSUs they use are marked for peak wattage and do not really even hit that. Aged ones perform even more poorly.

It's a Pavilion 6320y, PSU upgrade is out of the question. She's not that technically inclined, or adventurous, and I couldn't find any info whether or not the PSU used a proprietary wiring pattern. Rig's used for some gaming mainly, nothing to heavy, a few MMO's. Probably going to go with a NV 520, the nearest Best Buy has one in stock, and there are no enthusiast stores anywhere near.

520 isnt worth it. get the 6670 or 6570.

6570 will probably work on a 300W PSU since she's using a phenom.

The 520 is slightly better than your onboard and will not game. Changing the PSU is easer then changing the GPU. Theres no driver to mess with

But agree with the 6570 as you best bet

Seriously, you can order the parts for her cheap nad have her ship it to you and ship it back for what... $40?

If its a friend you dont charge labor.. so $40 + cost.. not a big deal... 1600 miles is half the country, so get reduced rate shipping as well

HAve her scheduale the "upgrade time" when she is not home.

If she cant not handle connecting and reconnecting the peripherals, than she really cant handle adding in a video card can she...

For that matter, find someone closer to her that will do the upgrade for $20.
