Just got back into the mmorpg games now that Rift is out and guild wars 2 and D3 are on its way and need a better PC to handle it. Been out of the tech crowd for a bit so sorry for my ignorance. Came across this little rig on newegg for cheap wondering if its worth it or a better pc can be built for cheaper or around the same price to suite my needs.

CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra 2098 (GU2098) Desktop PC ...

Thanks in advance :toast:

Short answer: Don't buy that POS.

You can build better for the same/cheaper.

Even the SB i3's are better than the 4 core zambezi CPU's.

That graphics card is NOT even close to enough power to run rift at high settings, let alone max.

When rift first came out, I had frame rate issues with dual gtx 470's and an overclocked i7 950... I later switched to crossfired 6970's, and they were plenty to max it out and play in eyefinity.

What resolution will you play at? Do you want maximum settings? What frame rate are you expecting? Is your budget flexible a little bit?

You should build a cheap sb i3 machine with a 6850 or better, unless you're playing at 1024x768 or something. Rift uses a lot of vram at high resolutions with eye candy.

Thanks for your honest reply because i was very tempted to buy this tomorrow lol...

Max settings would be nice but really what ever my budget could afford which is 550-600$ with no monitor because i have one already.

I hate to ask to be spoon feed like a baby but if someone could lay out a decent build that will suite my needs within my budget i would really appreciate that.

I'm going to let someone else handle that at the moment.

You could get a nice little SB i3 / i5 build, or maybe a second hand i5/i7 1366/1156 based rig. Now is a great time to get second hand parts on craigslist / newegg recertified. I've even seen an asus G73 with i7 / 8GB RAM / 5870M laptop for $650 on craigslist. That laptop is more powerful than the desktop you linked by far. There are several options, but plenty of people will chime in with builds for you.

A previous gen i7 build with a 6850/6870 or 560Ti would be plenty most likely. What size/resolution is your monitor?

Super cheap build I did just clicking on deals. I took about 30 seconds to put this together. You can easily refine it, but this is plenty to game with for a while at your resolution.

Intel Core i3 2100 $109.99

AsRockH67M B3 Micro ATX Motherboard $79.99

Cheaper mobo options if you wanna go really low end

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory $42.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 ...

CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply $49.99
CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W ATX12V v2.3 8...

PowerColor AX6870 1GB $139.99 MIR
PowerColor AX6870 1GBD5-2DH Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256...

Just pick a nice little case and you're set.

$422.95 without the case. that's a nice deal. It will also CRUSH that box you linked. The GPU is light years more powerful, and will handle higher res and eyecandy, with better VRAM. You can also do 3+ monitors out of the box, and it will let you max out most all games at 1080p if you upgrade your monitor with the cash you save.

PS: I would get a 6950 1GB or 2GB and overclock it if you want to spend a little bit more. It will let you truly max out basically 100% of games at 1080p.

I don't bother with any of that. Those are things that the user needs to choose on his own. Most people already have peripherals so I don't include that stuff. Regardless, yes you need a copy of windows obviously so you can use the computer. I'm assuming the OP has a KB and mouse because he has a monitor and stuff.

OP: Looks like with your extended budget you could get an i5 2500K and a 6950 maybe. I don't think you'll really need either, but you would have an all around powerful machine. You would maybe want to get a slightly more powerful PSU, but the 500 watter should do the job.

No problem. Don't forget if you are going to overclock the CPU you may need a better CPU cooler and a slightly bigger PSU to be safe. You should be able to play games maxed out with mostly stock settings though.

Good luck and let us know if you need more info.

That's a really good deal.

OP: I would get the 600 watter just in case. It's definitely worth the $5.

Oh, have you found a small case yet that you like? I can help pick some case options for you. You should go as small as possible, then you have portability and power. Just make sure you check the dimensions or link it here so we can confirm everything will fit!

Here's one of the best budget mid towers available: COOLER MASTER Storm Scout SGC-2000-KKN1-GP Black S...
This thing will let you fit a bigger mobo if you want to go standard ATX. You could even fit crossfire/sli in there, and it has a window and handle!!! You won't find a much better option for $70. I highly recommend this one.

Wanna go even cheaper? NZXT Source 210 S210-001 Black “Aluminum Bru...
Can't go wrong for $20. $19.99 is ridiculously cheap. Holy shit! FYI that sale ends today.
If I were looking for the cheapest case possible this would be it.

I would try a used/recertified hard drive right now. HDD/SSD prices are going to be high for about a solid year. Although I've seen some good deals on external bundles. Like someone else said in another thread, you can get a 1-3TB external HDD for cheaper and remove the drive and install it in your computer. Not a bad idea, just make sure you check the HDD specs so you don't get a super slow drive or something.

Another good option is checking the for sale threads here on TPU. You will find some hard drives most likely.

Let us know if you have any other specific questions.

I can't recommend that Rosewill case really. If you wanna go dirt cheap go for the NZXT case I linked for $20. At that price and rating it can't be beat. You have to order today though as the price goes back up to $40 tomorrow. It will be a well spent $20 man, trust me. If you are willing to shell out an extra $50 get the cooler master storm scout. It's definitely a bit higher quality, and the features on it put it way above the rosewill.

You DEFINITELY made the right decision bro. The storm scout is basically legendary at this point. Every feature on it, especially the front panel, cable management, and handle system are really sick. I would love to grab one of those for a budget LAN build.

Don't be fooled by the "low end" associations of the i3's, because the i3 2100 is a wolf in sheep's clothing. It's a real performer, and perfect for the type of gaming rig you want. You will not regret it.

Hmmm, 1600x900 resolution; juss going to give my .02 on video cards....

An HD6770/GTX550ti/GTX460/HD6850 wouldn't run half bad at that res. Had the gtx460 paired with that res and it performed REMARKABLE, after I added some AA I can't tell a difference between that and 1080p. Don't need HD6950 at that res, and could do a 1GB version if you REALLY REALLY wanted High settings with 4xAA on 99% of game titles.

JrRacinFan is right. I think a 6790 or GTX 460 would do you well, but I'm all about buying something that is a bit more than what you absolutely need in case you upgrade your monitor later or something. If you're going to go with the cheap motherboard that only has one PCIE slot though, make sure you get what you need because you can't crossfire/SLI. It only supports one card.

I can recommend a budget SLI/Crossfire board if you think you would need to upgrade, but if you're going to stick with your current monitor/resolution you will be just fine with one card.

I wouldn't go with anything less than a 6790 though as far as I'm concerned. A 6850/6870 is what I personally recommend to you though. Even though you run a below 1080p resolution there are some high end games that you won't be able to max out eye candy on with a 6770 or other low-mid range cards.

So to recap, like he said you don't need a 6950 by any means, but a 6870 will cover all your bases and keep you playing at super high settings for years to come.

Feel free to ask more questions so we can help refine the build for you.

Thanks dude glad i didnt buy that heap from my first post, it was an eye sore to say the lest. After being updated with the times i see how much of a waste it really is haha. Placing my order on Monday.

No problem. And yes, that desktop you linked is one ugly junker. It has a couple OK components, but it is a terrible overall config for gaming. That case is downright hideous, the CPU is weak and no good for gaming, the graphics card can't even max out solitaire (kidding, but it is extremely weak for gaming), and did I mention that it is really ugly? I'm really glad you came to us before buying something like that.

I feel fine with the 6870 it fits in my budget so im fine with the price tag. As for the mobo if i feel the need to upgrade later i will, but at this time the build you laid out with the combo deal on cpu/psu im really happy with.

Totally. The 6870 is a SERIOUS budget performer. It has a very high performance to dollar ratio when compared to other high end graphics cards. If you ever need to upgrade to a crossfire mobo setup down the line, the 6870 has superb dual GPU scaling. You can't go wrong. Congrats on the new computer to come. Make sure you update us when the parts arrive so we can help with the build. I'm excited to see how well it performs.

@ LordJummy and JR: First that was some great parts ya linked LordJummy! :) With that said, keep in mind that Stussy may end up going for a larger 23 or 24 inch monitor later on, so the faster video card does make it future proof for some time. I think keeping what LJ posted is a wise idea. Also wanted to note that the Cooler Master cases are awesome quality. You will not be disappointed purchasing the Scout case.

Oh yea, and a huge welcome to TPU Stussy!!!!! :toast::toast::toast:

@ LordJummy and JR: First that was some great parts ya linked LordJummy! :) With that said, keep in mind that Stussy may end up going for a larger 23 or 24 inch monitor later on, so the faster video card does make it future proof for some time. I think keeping what LJ posted is a wise idea. Also wanted to note that the Cooler Master cases are awesome quality. You will not be disappointed purchasing the Scout case.

Oh yea, and a huge welcome to TPU Stussy!!!!! :toast::toast::toast:

Oh and I just noticed that the super cheap 6870 I linked comes with a free copy of Dirt 3. That is a SUPER SICK deal for $139.99. Jeez...

You are going to love that game if you don't already have it. The 6870 will let you play DX11 mode maxed out which looks beautiful.

Oh and here's a thought for down the road. If you save up $270 you can get three of these monitors for a super cheap EYEFINITY setup. Three screen gaming will change your idea of fun man. Dirt 3 looks beautiful on triple screens. There are even some $90 1080p monitors if you look hard enough. If you go used on craigslist/ebay you can get a 5760x1080 LED LCD setup for under $300 easily. Anyways, that's just an after thought ;) AMD graphics cards let you do triple screen gaming really easily.

OH btw, do you already play rift? Just curious. I pre ordered it and played it for a couple weeks back in March, but I got really bored before I could lvl up to 50. I also haven't played WoW since the second month of Cataclysm. I really hated that expansion, bleh. I have been thinking about getting back into Rift or something though, at least until D3 is released...

Not to say DX11 on it loads faster...much faster. I think the 6870 would be a perfect choice anyway, price/performance it delivers you probably can't beat it, especially on a budget. I don't regret buying a pair of them, and since due to CAP problems I'm running mainly 1 in most games, it's still excellent performance (1920 x 1080 res).
