I'm looking for a SB water block for my MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3). I can't find any.

Does the S1155 Z68 SB chip even need liquid cooling?

Am I better off without SB block in my loop?

I have a MIPS X58 NB chipset water block that I am thinking about putting on my MB. I just need to modify the stock MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3)(link to photo of the block).

Just not sure if it is worth the effort. If the added cooling will substantially lower temps then i think it will be warranted. If he stock SB heatsink works perfectly fine then i don't think i will do it. What to do???

Z68 uses so little power (6.1W TDP) that it would be a waste.

I've read but I still am not sure if a decent water block would help out the SB even so slightly for stability.

I do have a nice X58 MIPS NB water block sitting around that I think I can modify to the stock heat sink. I'd have to do that because it doesn't fit the MB holes.

What kind of temps does it have when overclocking i52500k to 5Ghz+ and memory to 2000mhz+??

The same as if it were stock. None of those components go through the southbridge. The southbridge handles USB, onboard NIC, Storage, Audio and PCI-E. It's an absolute waste of time watercooling the southbridge since overclocking your system has nothing to do with it.

The only part of the motherboard that even remotely needs water cooling would be the VRM's, if you're overvolting a lot, those can get quite toasty.

Does heat increase during over clocking? Wouldn't the speed of the system increase SB duties and require a little extra voltage for SB duties? I'm really not sure. IF not then I see that your logic makes perfect sense. No need to water cool it if it doesn't need it and I would rather let my loop focus on the CPU and GPU.

I don't have a block for the VRMs. Don't plan on buying any blocks. Just want to use what I have if it will help out.

I'm just putting my MSI Z68-GD65 G3/2500k build together. Did some testing in the BIOS just to make sure everything looked decent before installing OS.

So far everything looks good. I did notice that the Southbridge heat sink is the hottest heatsink on my mb. I think I have a water block that fits on it. I'm fighting the urge to not not put a block on it. Please tell me again that I don't need to. :D

What are your temps on your SB? Do you think cooling down your SB would help you get a faster OC?

Where are you getting the idea that a cooler southbridge will yeild in a faster OC? The 1155 southbridge doesn't even get hot!

The southbridge handles USB, onboard NIC, Storage, Audio and PCI-E.

None of these things will help your CPU overclock.

The one on my MSI Z68 GD65 G3 gets hot to the touch. Hottest heat sink on the motherboard.

Running DDR3 matched to this kit specs G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR...

Passes memtest86+ v4.2 no problem and the heat sinks on the RAM don't feel hot to the touch but the SB heat sink on my MB gets hot to the touch.

It's fine hot though. Even overclocking, you don't adjust anything in SB that would require more cooling, as there are no bus changes involved, or if there are, it's very minute. No different than a VGA running @ 85c 24/7.

It may be acceptable performance running hot but I'd rather run cooler to take a load off of it. I wouldn't want the excess heat from it in my water loop with my CPU and GPU though. I'm thinking about adding an improved thermal heat sink to it instead of water cooling it. I just want it to run cooler.

Just do it already. You obviously didn't want the truth when you made the thread, since you've rejected every member telling you that's it's unnecessary.

If you want it to run cooler, that's great. It's the modder/tweaker inside you. Please don't ask us to justify you spending your time on it in order to increase your performance, though.

The tweaker inside tells me that lowering the operating temps of my Z68 chipset will improve performance. :toast:

I am puzzled on how decreasing the Chipset temperatures will yield you additional performance.
Are you going to overclock your sata ports? :D

Something you have to realize, you aren't overclocking any part of the motherboard AT ALL. The only thing you could do to help keep your board alive from possible overheating is to cool the VRM's.
