Hey Guys,

Friend asked me to build a computer for him hoping you guys can give me some pointers as I haven't been following the pc market for a quite a while.

Okay we are based in Australia\Sydney so prices will be in AUD.
He has a rough budget of $1000 and we need a whole tower and a monitor preferably 23inch one.
He would like to play sc2 at max settings but isn't much of a gamer so crossfire\sli isn't necessary.

Throw me your builds :)

Thanks!

Is there any particular reason for a full tower? You'd be using a bit more of the budget than you need to.

I think what OP meant by "whole tower" was that it needs to be complete, ie: no old components to re-use.

edit: Anyways, for main components, get an Intel Core i5 2500-K and any socket 1155 board (unless you plan to OC, then you want a better board, but you don't really need to OC). Any kit of 2x4gb DDR3 1333. Either a GTX 560 Ti or an HD-6950.

Impossible if you have the monitor using up some of the budget too.
Bullshit.

I left out the HDD 'cause prices on 'em are shit right now. You should wait for them to come down if you can.

I'm sorry, but getting the 2500K with an H61 board is pointless. You spent more money for the unlocked multiplier and a bump in (stock) frequency over the 2400.

And then you still have that "I left out the HDD 'cause prices on 'em are shit right now. You should wait for them to come down if you can." disclaimer.

Fair enough, but it's not like it really cost a ton more for that CPU. Middle ground here would be the 2500 which I thought about, but there is only a $10 difference between it and the K version so I figured might as well get the K.
And then you still have that "I left out the HDD 'cause prices on 'em are shit right now. You should wait for them to come down if you can." disclaimer.
How is that a problem? There was still plenty of cash left over for the HDD and you can't deny that HDD prices are ridiculous because of the floods.

Unless you plan on putting an SSD in there, it doesn't make a difference. No HDD will use that much bandwidth, even if it supports it.

Check your prices at Static Ice, although PC Case Gear will do you well.

I didn't really want to buy from pc case gear because then we'll have to get it shipped in which adds to the cost.

I know they are great shop (I bought my psu, mb and videocard there) but being a budget build usually the shipping would add more

Will your friend want to learn how to overclock? Or will be overclocking? If not, don't overlook an AMD build with an FX4100(high clock @ stock) and a nice 990X motherboard.

EDIT:

The only reason I am asking, overclocking is becoming more a niche now than a "necessity".

no plans on overclocking, i find it to be too much hassle if the owner doesn't want to learn themselves or don't have any knowledge in it.

Honestly speaking if you are only going to play Sc2 you can easily get an i3 and still get max settings, that game is not very demanding. 2400 would be my pick if no overclocking is needed, any mobo suitable is good enough.

MWAVE have horrible service and refund/warranty policies. You need to check out www.ITestate.com.au its based in North Rocks near Parrammatta, these guys let me return a 6 month old system and only charged me restocking fee but of course it had no price protection.

Here is a build from them $1006 AUD with monitor, no hdd (I suggest investing on this later use whatever one you have now).

I beg you not to buy anything from Mwave if anything goes wrong they'll be quick to direct you to the manufacturer and they just have the worse policies in regards to service and warranties. If you're buying local I definitely suggest www.itestate.com.au they are really nice people and provide A+ service, been buying from them and PCCG for years. If you decide to do delivery they use Fastway so it's very cheap since you live around Sydney I'd guess around 30-40 AUD.

I find it weird you say that because I have purchase from both IT estate and Mwave, I didn't have a problem with either just a few hiccups here and there but nothing worth saying they are bad company over.

I had a once off bad experience with PCCG which cost me about $100 in shipping and in the end the problem wasn't solved and I just gave up on it.

I purchased speakers from them, literally cannot find them anywhere in Sydney which is odd it was a Klipsch 2.1 system and it keeps making an annoying sound when on standby, I spoke with Klipsch directly and they said to return it and each time I unpacked a new set from them I notice the problem straight away.
