Just noticed that Guru3D have a HD 7970 overclocking guide and I couldn't resist making this thread! It looks like this baby is an overclocking monster.

Last Thursday the Radeon HD 7970 launched, the product is creating a lot of buzz alright. Next to our reference review article we have shown you a CPU scaling article. There's still one bit missing though, tweaking performance.

Now initially I wanted to wait with this article until 3rd party tweak tools would allow for voltage tweaking on the Tahiti GPU. Unfortunately that might take a while as AMD hammered the API for accessing I2C bus completely shut.

Here at Guru3D we develop MSI's AfterBurner and while the VTweak project on the 7970 is work in progress I just couldn't let you miss out on default overclocking as the results are phenomenal really.

Here's a hint ...

Seriously, in the review we already mentioned that a little twiddling with the card allowed for much higher clock frequencies. However after actually spending more then 2 minutes I got flabbergasted. With only three steps you can clock the Radeon HD 7970 towards a blistering 1125 MHz on the graphics core, that's 200 MHz above reference at default voltage. The memory is clocked at 5500 MHz at default, well we can increase it towards 1575 MHz and that boils down to an effective data rate of 6300 MHz / Gbps (!)

All that without significant increases of heat and noise levels, hey once again we'll demonstrate it all. The Radeon HD was looking good already, but it's getting better and better with every hour that passes ...

Anyway as cadaveca said on another thread I think too that AMD has been too conservative with clocks... This chip will be worth it's gold under water.
AMD/ATI pulled out an awesome architecture, GCN is a win and whoever answered to the review "the card is underwhelming" is crazy. NVIDIA has a tough opponent this time, more than before in the recent times, I hope the competition will light up a giant fire because we gain more without one company's monopoly
Also I am in love with dual GPUs so I will prolly wait until 7990 release to pull the trigger

For me on a single monitor with no wish to change to more a dual 7970 would be disgusting overkill even i cannot fathom.

However, as the final piece of my silent system with water, I think I am almost certain I'll get a water cooled version of this. My 580 does well and she's a beautiful card but I need more liquid inside my pc

Yeah, apart from the noise the 7970 is a fine move from AMD.

I see Kepler beating it but I don't see Kepler.

Kepler is on vacation right now, nobody knows when he'll turn back at work. Definitely, for high end users this is the card to get and overclocking reviews start appearing on the net and all suggest that the performance scales very well with OC bringing the 7970 in the company of the 6990 and the 590. Now with NV, from rumours, the top GPU won't even be around until the second part of 2012 or maybe even later and they will launch GK104 first.

No. I didn't get my 580 all that long ago and I'm not really looking to change, especially after the £460-odd I've just spent on upgrading my PC (which I still haven't put together yet, but that's another story, lol). Even if the "GTX 680" came out tomorrow and was twice as fast as the 7970, I still wouldn't get it now, because I've rather overstretched the budget, again.

I wonder if the 7970 is really gonna flex its muscles when overclocked? The indications are that it's gonna be something special and may give the 580 and 6990 a spanking. I'm looking forward to seeing people's overclocking adventures on here.

All Guru3d did was use CCC for overclocking. The article is pretty pedestrian especially considering they just moved all of the sliders to the right. The benchmarking results are nice as an indicator of overclocked performance. Unless the point is to share what Guru3d did, I don't see the point in making this thread when you aren't partaking in it.

I just saw "overclocking guide" and figured it would make a good starting point for a TPU 7970 overclocking thread, that's all. I don't have to be involved in the activity to be interested in what others are getting up to. I still keep tabs on my SB-E overclocking thread, even though I don't have such a system, for example.

It looks like this should be reasonably achievable by owners of standard 7970's - I look forward to seeing what people can achieve, especially if they can beat this result.

I'm also thinking that I will be worth to go custom water this time more than before, maybe I'll do it with my Hailea Waterchiller, that should get me awesome clocks.
The fact is, to wait for Kepler or splash the pot with a 7970 CFX?

i'm gonna buy it, but this is the last one for 10 years... must not neglect wife and 6 kids(anymore)...

in retrospect, having their benefits paid into my bank account was a bad idea.... thier still starving from my sandy bridge upgrade...

but seriously, i wanted to change my car and keep my wardrobe sharp... how can any of us who are really into tech resist such amazing silicon...

this is the one time i wished AMD's card would be a minor upgrade and its a monster...

hahaha I'm same with you, I even didn't have anymore money because I want this card really badly, I mean that thing overclock like a madmen and the performance is really mind blowing, its can even beat quad CFX/SLI
