What do you mean clocked the same? The Cores? I mean I read this too, but im jsut wondering what the "they" is.

yeah, i was talking about the cores. it will be interesting to see how kepler does, they probably beefed up the cores because of this but if not, i don't think it'll look good for nvidia.

wait and see i guess.

I said yes, as two of those cards in crossfire would be a worthy upgrade from what im running now, everything since just hasnt been enough to justify the cost.

I think they would have sold so many more cards if they priced them just a bit lower... then whatever nvidia was going to "rush" to marked would not have sold as well - since everyone would have just upgraded.

Yes in terms of performance etc. but the pricing is way too steep on the 7970 to consider it a "good" upgrade right now, but of course to those who have the money it is a different story :).

I think I am a bit impressed with what they were able to achieve with the high-end 7k cards. Some people complain that AMD weren't able to get better results due to it being 2 die shrinks, but they forget that it is the same percentage die shrink as it was with 55nm to 40nm. Which was about 40% reduction. Same thing when it went from 40nm to 28nm, about 40% reduction. But at the same time, I don't feel that there's a need for such power, most people will agree. The only game to be honest that stresses cards to the extreme is BF3 and Metro 2033. I only have the latter, so it would'nt be much of a difference for me. My 5850 runs every game I play just fine and dandy. Once a few more worthwhile games come out that require that much power, then I will consider jumping ship most likely to a 7950, or the Nvidia equivalent, whichever is the better price/performance.

Or indeed even one of those cards would soundly spank CF'd 4870's with much less power consumption, heat, driver headaches, etc etc...

Why is it performing better when flashed to a 7970 bios? It becomes like a 7960. If it's just changing timings and vram I'd worry we'll have a repeat of that 6950->6970 burn out issue.

uhhh.. actually that is a good question...

although the burn out issue i thought was more of a placebo effect no? was it actually a real issue, or weak cards?

I think it was maybe fluke bad cards. I've had a lot of 69x0 cards and only one died, but it was from super extreme OC'ing. Back in february i tested them with full 6970 bios and no problems. I later flashed them down to 6970 shaders only and OC'd them. No memory burn outs or anything.

It's also possible the ones that died were due to uneducated users f*cking them up.

But it be interesting to see how 1 7970 vs my two cards would perform (DX10 of course)

If the cost of 7950 was 320€ and not 420€, I'd buy one today. Now, not a chance. And it could be my first time I'd get something other than Nvidia + Intel ( 4PCs - 10Years ).

Now I'm gonna wait for Nvidia. I've 350€ to spend, but IF the new cards will worth. I'd really like a GTX670 being slighty stronger than 570 and of course with less power consumption. Even a GTX660 ( 300€ ) if the rumors gonna be true.

I think it would probably crush your cards performance. All you have to do is pull up the relative performance charts and see...

I voted "NO"

Cards are $600+ locally. $450, OK, fine.

What's that? 7950 is $450 instead? That should have been $379. Then 1.5 GB cards should have been $329.

I think I'm skipping this gen, or if I do buy more VGAs, it'll be more 6950 2GB cards, which, for me, are the ultimate in price/performance right now.

Performance fo these cards does not justify the pricing, IMHO, so there is no way I'd buy one.

Considering i can outperform 2 6950's (just) in benchmarks im not sure on that, and its a bit hard as all the tests done with the 7970 are in DX11, so not a fair comparison.

True, but enough information is out about it to know that:

1. Price will be higher than people thought $400-$450.
2. It will probably not unlock due to the PCB differences.
3. It will not be a blower type design.

Ultimately what Dave said is what I think too, and that is why I said no as well.

I vote yes from my personal experience with the 7970.

1) Exactly doubles the performance of my previous HD5870
2) Overclocks to 1125/1575 without voltage increase
3) Proper drivers from day 1 for all my games (Skyrim, WoW etc), and I guess there will be more performance gains with future drivers.
4) The biggest advantage: Overclocking finally gives a REAL increase. 10% OC (1000/1425)gives 7% better scores in 3dmark11 while 20% OC (1125/1575) gives 12% better, and the card is just about 2-3 degrees hotter. Thats better than 1-2% increase with 10% OC on my 5870.

The only bad thing: the price will certainly be 10-15% lower in a few months.

Edit: It's funny that I saw the HD7950 for £420 on a website while the stock HD7970 are around £450. Who buys the lower model for £30 less at that high price?

curious to know why 7970 was a disappointment...

@fanbuey, is the fact that all reviews' conclusions effectively said "yawn... lets wait for the uber leet nvidia card". when in fact 7970 is 20% faster than existing cards... when the 580 was released it was faster than every thing... yes 20% percent and they all raved that it was great. but that card was over-priced (50% more than the 570, yet only 20% faster).
While the 7970 is 20% faster than everything, (single card) yet is the same price as the 580. the price increase vs amd cards is linear i.e. approx 50% percent faster than 6970 vs 7970.
In short Nvidia has been getting a free pass on their overpriced cards... (we'll have to see if the new nvidia cards are priced reasonably... semiaccurate's rumour states that the "660" has the same fps as the 580 for 300. i doubt it but awaiting the cards release)

yet, I want to get the 7970.

I think the 7970 landed right where I expected, so yes. I think I'm going to buy one now and get a second one when the prices drop later on.
