Problem, please help

Yesterday, I was playing alittle COD while my computer was crunching, when my computer just locked up. It was pretty simular to a gfx driver crash like what happens when my video cards overheat because I forget to turn up the fans. I figured no problem. Reboot and turn the fans up and continue what I was doing. The computer would not boot back up. All it would do is lights would come on, fans would spin up, and then it would just shut down. I've tried clearing/resetting my bios. I've tried removing the video cards and running on my CPU's graphics, I've tried using just a single stick of RAM(I tried using both sticks seperatly). I've tried using the RAM in different slots. Nothing worked. Computer won't even boot to bios. So I'm thinking my motherboard went out. Thoughts?

I'm thinking your thinking along the right track, to me it could be one of 3 things as you have tried both ram sticks individually.......

1. Motherboard Failure
2. PSU rail failure (forget if you have a single rail) but fairly unlikely
3. CPU failure

It's difficult to determine which between 1 and 3 as symptoms could be the same, you could argue that if lights come on and fans spin it may be less likely that it's a board problem than a CPU problem. The only thing I can suggest at this stage is to unplug and disconnect everything, re-seat CPU and cooler, re-connect and if it still does not work, start calling on friends to borrow a PSU and a CPU through a process of elimination.

my PSU does have a single rail, but it is old.

my CPU has been running pretty much at full load crunching since I got it. MAX temps for it have been right around the 70'c mark.

I could use some more opinions people.

Theres nothing else to say.

If it just suddenly died like that. However on the other hand if you just rebuilt and put you hardware in the case and nothing happened when you pushed the power button then that would most likely be an earthing issue if all the cables are plugged in correctly.

The only time ive experience something similar is working with a really old machine that seemed to like earthing itself with the case a lot and a bad PSU eating one of my 4870s that i was running in crossfire.

4 months ago I happened exact same issue. Suddenly the system went to reboot. My Corsair TX-950 PSU was burned. Fans worked the diodes on the motherboard glow, but the BIOS will not start. When turned on again was the smell of burnt electronics.

Computer has been assembled and working for the past 4 or so months.

Did you take out the CMOS battery? Try using 1 stick of RAM, unplugging unnecessary stuff like the DVD burner, taking out both GPUs (using your iGPU in your 2600K)

I did everything you listed except unplugging the DVD drive

I'll be leaving for work here shortly, but I'll definenetly be checking back on this when I get home. Please people, keep the suggestions coming.

Unfortunately, the smell is not always present. This is me as the "lucky" and I was able to quickly determine the problem. Previously, the PSU is also burned, but the smell was not. I have not asserted that this is a PSU is to blame, but the symptoms are very similar.

There an easy way to test your PSU. Here:

You could try and test that PSU on another machine or get another PSU to this machine
But, as it was pointed here, it might be first a mobo failure and second a CPU failure.

Were you running your RAM at higher voltage than 1.5v?

If you determine that the PSU is fine you might want to take everything apart and reassemble with bare minimum to see if you have POST. If that fails send the mobo back and then see with the CPU.

as silly as this sounds, a similar thing happened to me a while back. And it turned out that some thermal paste had found its way between the CPU and mobo. No idea how it happened especially as it had not been upgraded or anything like that for about a year. So i would check the socket area and make sure nothing is between the cpu and mobo.

PS No i did not over use thermal paste as the problem would have arised earlier. And I use the same process in all the computers i have built before and after that particular PC with no problems.

24/7 crunching will do this, the others are on the right track. you've got a hardware failure, now its time to test with spares and find out what failed.

Ok, so I'm going to go ahead and order a new PSU and motherboard. I had already been thinking of getting an ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3, so that's what I'll get for the board. For the PSU, I've picked out a few that meet my criteria. My criteria is single rail, modular, high quality, and atleast a +80 effincency. Which one would you pick? I'm also open to other suggestions for a PSU.
