Question about xbox controllers for PC

Question: can I buy a receiver that will allow me to use a standard xbox 360 controller or do I have to buy a specially designed 360 controller for pc?

You can use any Xbox 360 controller with a windows PC. The wired ones or wireless ones with a play-and-charge kit cable plugged into the PC will work without anything else needed.

The wireless controllers need the Xbox wireless receiver for windows - that'll let you use the wireless controllers with no problems.

The pictures of the ebay item are not the official microsoft version as it doesn't say "Microsoft" on the top (white) section, and doesn't say Microsoft on the underside (it has "XBOX 360" on the underside where it should say Microsoft), so it looks like a knockoff (which may or may not work the same).

Play and charge doesn't work, it has missing pins ( no data) so it only charges.

I don't even know where you can buy an official wireless adapter anymore. All the ones on amazon reviews say they aren't official, though some are said to work just as well.

Just tried it and yeah it didn't work on its own. Turns out that the message I was getting on my PC saying wireless controller using play and charge kit connected was still coming from the wireless receiver (the message made it look like it was detecting it through the kit).

i bought a 360 wireless controller for PC from Newegg, then my father in law won a standard 360 wireless controller and i can say without a doubt that the reg 360 controller does pick up on the receiver. Was playing 2 player Street Fighter 4 the other day to test it out after i got it

So the standard Xbox 360 wireless controller does not have rechargable batteries - it comes with an AA battery holder that takes 2 AA batteries. You can buy a play and charge kit (I'd suggest the official Microsoft ones as my mates' knock-off battery pack didnt last long) which is a rechargable battery pack that slots where the AA battery pack would have gone (it fits any of the official wireless controllers), and it also comes with a USB cable that will charge the controller (you can use it while it is charging so there is 0 downtime). I use play and charge kits with my controllers as it's easier than trying to find new AA batteries in the middle of a halo CTF game...
