What else can i say other than i hate this 7970 its has a load of problem which piss me off, the drivers are S##T and i really think AMD is cheaping out on components, Take this for one the DVI port cant handle 120hz but the DP port can, But even then using the DP port just randomly my screen will cut out and it will say i should be using 1920x1080 which i am i turn off and on my screen and it works again, I was going to wait for nvidia high end card but i think what ever they release next will do.

Yup, this is why I prefer nvidia nowadays. I used to be a die-hard ATI/AMD user until I tried an old 8800GTX during my time with an HD4870. I then sold the 4870, got a GTX 285 and never looked back. Things with nvidia cards usually just work.

To be fair though, the level of issues you're seeing aren't typical of what users usually report.

No disrespect. But how is that AMD's fault. If your hardware is faulty that is Sapphire's fault. You should be saying, "Sapphire, first and last time".

Which is funny, because I usually think the opposite. Historically Nvidia's card has never been good to me, but AMD/ATI stuff always have.

I agree completely. I've tried Sapphire cards several times, and EVERY time I've had to RMA for bizarre issues like you describe. Their support is absolutely awful too.

Indeed, individual experiences can be completely at odds and both be legitimate. It depends on so many factors.

I think it's what you are "stuck" with. From an ATI 9600 I switched to an 8800GT simply because it was better than anything ATI had to offer then. Since everything went very well there was no reason to switch to ATI/AMD and every NV card I owned gave me near zero problems. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I would buy an AMD card only if I am dissatisfied with what I've got and the performance of an AMD card is not matched by NV.

Live OR Die, Remember the 9600GT? It was plagued with problems, like bluescreens of deaths, black screens of deaths. Your post is bias! I actually had the XFX 9600GT I had to change motherboard chipsets to stop the random lock ups. I don't blame Nvidia, I blame XFX. Once I had the card stable, about a year later it overheated and died. I was offered a free ATI 4830 which was stable and performed a little better.

That not true like i said this problem isn't related to the brand of card my friends card is XFX, and the card works fine on 60hz not one problem at all.

In the case of the 9600GT I was using XFX as an example, in this incident it was Nvidia's fault.

The 9600GT's the problem was actually a conflict with particular motherboard chipsets. Not sure whether it was on a driver level or hardware level. Nvidia went on record to admit it was their fault, but said it was too isolated to fix. There was an article on Fudzilla or another hardware site with a PR guy from Nvidia apologising.

My point was that whether you go Nvidia or ATI camp, there will eventually be problems, some will be the fault of the hardware, some will be hardware conflicts or software conflicts other times it will be the sub vendor e.g. Sapphire, XFX, BFG or whomever cutting corners.

There is no point playing the blame game boycotting brands. Just RMA your 7970 and get another brand and move on.

Know two piece of hardware is the same when they leave the factory. Your batch could of been made to a lesser quality.

Your item could of been dropped during transport from abroad Asia to Australia. It could of been dropped during transport from the supplier to the retailer. It could of been dropped again by the postman during delivery from retailer to your door. My point is, the item could of been damage before it arrived, that isn't ATIs fault.

My 7950 is plagued with driver issues...I have tried almost everything. I am close to reformatting my hard drive :(

You are not helping things. You are just fuelling the OPs paranoia. If you have driver issues create your own thread!

I only buy one brand of Nvidia hardware and that EVGA and i've ever had any problem and i dont think you understand the problem it not brand or model because the 7950 has the problem also.

Funny, I also went from HD4870 > GTX285 > GTX480, and then I got another GTX480.

The shop wont give me a refund only a replacement and i don't see the point if related the the HD 7xxx cards.

can't reply on the 120hz issue, but i've haven't ever had any issues with ati/amd or their drivers.

the last nvidia i had was a 6600nv and before that a geforce 4 ti...but a tone of ati/amd, 9600, 9800aiw, x800 unlocked to x850xt, x1800, 2400pro agp, 3850, 3450, 4830...

never once have i had any issue related to drivers from either side for that matter.

i'm with the other guys, as i steer clear from certain brands, but not from nvidia or amd or intel, i just go for what i think will be the best bang for my buck

That's why you don't buy brand new hardware right at or near release.
It's all part of the early adopter's tax.

The problem is most likely a combination of AMDs piss-poor gpu driver team combined with a new gpu architecture.

well AMD graphics is knowns for 120hz bugs driver related or not i dunno or the brand of monitor and quality of the cables, but it only amazes me bcs when users they their setup with a Nvidia GFX 120hz just works no flaws and i don't think it's ur HD 7970 Live OR Die maybe just basic crappy amd drivers.

sapphire really doesnt use the best components. then again theirs are the cheapest ones on the market, so its justified.

and... with my last amd card, i never had a problem with drivers.
infact nvidia drivers are somewhat giving me problems.

^^ agree with tecktard new hardware some takes a month or two of real world test to get drivers sorted... Be patient... does the card not work or you just knocking cause of drivers?

Well im going to see if i can replace my card with a Asus one if the card still has the problem ill sell it and never look back, because my old 480 can handle 120hz with no problem at all.

Like i said i cant see how it can be drivers when using Displayport reduces the problem around 90%.

I would test another manufacturer. I suggest ASUS Direct CU II! This looks to be a beast of a case
