Ok so upgrading to an hdmi/mini dp from my current monitor won't change anything visually unless the monitor is higher quality as I use dvi now?

I haven't set a budget for this I just want a high quality picture at a decent resolution.

I see a lot of talk about aspect ratios and refresh rates.how do those come into play. From what I understand 120 hz isn't needed since the screen isn't going to be over 30" so it doesn't need to be as fast?

HDMI and DVI use the same method to transfer pictures, there is no difference between them in terms of picture quality.

120hz is the screen refresh rate, a higher refresh rate makes things smoother (screen displays twice as many pictures in the same amount of time in 120hz vs 60hz), and the screen size has little to do with the refresh rate. Screen size would increase the resolution you need above anything else.

Refresh rate: More HZ means picture is smoother, the picture will also move from your graphics card to your screen a few milliseconds faster, tends to be good for gaming but unimportant anywhere else
Resolution: A higher resolution means the monitor will be able to show more detail in everything, text will be soother, pictures and video will look nicer

IPS monitors have better viewing angles and can display higher resolutions but it's going to bog the graphics card down and they were never designed with gaming in mind. something like the BenQ XL2420T/TX is going to be quicker, smoother, deeper black levels, no backlight bleed and support 3D.

I under stand the hz somewhat I guess what I was asking is the 120 hz going to make a difference on a small screen. Reason why people buy 120 hz tvs is because they refresh top to bottom 120 times per second. The second reason is if images come in at 24 fps it can't devide into 60 hz evenly so the tv has to guess where the image is

It's a little small if people are saying to go bigger then 1080

if you enjoy playing console ports at 40 FPS by all means. I don't use Photoshop, Final Cut or AutoCAD so these monitors are useless to me.

I currently run bf3 at 1920x1200 with 35-40 fps shouldn't have any issues with a more powerful card on the way

at that resolution no but at 2560x1440 there are a lot more pixels on screen to render.

That I can agree with, now were on the same page. Would upgrading from my 60 hz monitor to a 120 improve gaming quality while keeping the same resolution? or not enough to consider needing to upgrade the monitor? I'll check out prices when I get off work in about an hour
