I recently bought a wireless card for my computer. i opened up the computer, made room in a pci slot, but because theres no room on my desk to put the computer horizontal (and i was just being lazy), i just put the card in the pci slot, pushed a little bit, then tightened the screw. then everytime i tried to turn on my computer, it freezed up after the xp loading screen. i was getting pissed cause it wouldn't detect that i installed new hardware. i even had thoughts of reformatting to hopefully solve the problem. one of my roomates told me to make sure it was in the pci slot good, but i dismissed that. after another 20 min, i finally opened the case and looked to see if it was inserted all the way into the slot. turns out the right part of the card wasn't even in the slot all the way. then i booted it up, and installed the card smoothly. just remember, kids: theres a reason you are supposed to put the comp horizontal when installing cards. and also that it says to "rock" it back and forth into place. i feel like a fool.

I wouldn't worry about it, I did the exact same thing not too long ago. I, like you, couldn't figure out why it wouldn't go past Windows and then I figured it out.

I've done it installing ram a couple of times, myself. No big deal, it just happens sometimes.

Hmm crap when I install cards I just push them in really hard until it snaps in. :banghead:

Now I know, I'm saving up for an SLI 8800 GTX system...Imagine the worst.... Also another I almost ****ed myself over by not knowing about spacers and installing a MOBO. Luckily I found that out before building my first 'practice build'.

lol, I gotta add this one to.

I spent about 2 days trying to figure out why my system won't boot into windows. I must of re-installed windows a couple of times and formatted aswell.

...Figures, all I had to do was set the jumper on the hard drive right. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: I didn't notice both drives were set to master, so I just set them both to blank.

Probably won't have to worry about that on my next build though, I don't think SATA drives have jumper settigns anymore.

Some of them do. Some SATA 300 drives have a jumper to set them to SATA 150 mode for use on older controllers.

Although something like that has never happened to me once I bought a full computer and the 9800 pro video card in it was wedged to the side of the slot. Turned out it didn't work after that because it was second hand but I got a full computer for $127 with broken vid card so i'm not complaining.
