Problem is, what people want, and what a new IP (and direction for a genre) is are two different things. Theres been some great innovations in many genre's that failed to sell, and so they got marked as failures simply because people weren't comfortable stepping outside of their known boundaries.

There is some truth to that, but if no one every tries/dares to be different and take the risk, we're stuck with the same old recycled BS forever. I tend to support comanies that try something new even if it does not turn out great just so they don't give up ... as long as they don't have EA or Ubisoft in the name.

What I find interesting is that he is creditted with so much, but Quake 1 was only the start. Quake III was the real accomplishment, a game that was developed 2 years after Romero left the company. It seems more like his biggest accomplishment is finding talented people, and not actual game design or development...
