Valve: free games for great players, pay top dollar if you're a troll and a cheat

How good is Valve's idea?

Valve's Gabe Newell has had an idea for a possible new business model, where people that are nice to each other online get top games cheaper, even for free. However, troll, lie and cheat your way and expect to get screwed by paying top dollar and then some.

Good idea or terrible idea? I reckon there's a fundamental flaw in it, because I'm sure no-one will want to be the sucker that pays for everyone else and will do almost anything to avoid it, including perhaps a full-on boycott should they be selected for premium pricing. Also, what objective measure would be used to identify and label such people?

The industry has this broken model, which is one price for everyone. That’s actually a bug, and it’s something that we want to solve through our philosophy of how we create entertainment products.

What you really want to do is create the optimal pricing service for each customer and see what’s best for them. We need to give customers, all of them, a robust set of options regarding how they pay for their content.

An example is – and this is something as an industry we should be doing better – is charging customers based on how much fun they are to play with. Some people, when they join a server, a ton of people will run with them. Other people, when they join a server, will cause others to leave. We should have a way of capturing that. We should have a way of rewarding the people who are good for our community.

So, in practice, a really likable person in our community should get Dota 2 for free, because of past behaviour in Team Fortress 2. Now, a real jerk that annoys everyone, they can still play, but a game is full price and they have to pay an extra hundred dollars if they want voice.

while sure I'd love to penalize the jerks, that doesn't seem to fit in with a business model. I mean if you get Group A who think Group B are jerks and Group B thinks Group A are jerks then both would be charged more despite the fact that those in Group A get along with each other fine and have an enjoyable time playing together and those in Group B similarly have fun playing with other Group B'ers.

unsustainable business model and could kill off dota 2 if they try and implement it. Dota 2 already has stiff competition from other similar games.

Good idea, problematic realisation. Who will be the judge to decide who's a troll and who's nice?
It's just not possible to work this out...

What if young players misbehave and start to mature? They still need to be paying "full" just because they have been 12.
And of course, who is going to judge and how?

A rather pointless idea but I'd like to see where he'd go with it. However, I don't think it's at all realistic and not truly bothered.

That's not true.
Before implementing this 'new idea' it'd be much better to make their games really one price for everyone, and not us in EU have to pay €50 for a game which costs US$50.

A more sound business model would be to discount games to pirates in order to encourage them to buy games at retail in the future. Hell, pirates already have it free so any charge they succeed at getting is a win for them.

This idea sounds like "doomed to fail."

Hasn't Valve said that the publishers set the price and not them? In other words, it is EA/Activision/Ubisoft/etc.'s fault, not Valve's. For example, Half-Life 2 is £6.99 in UK, $9.99 in USA, and 8,99€ in Germany.

It's simpler to offer a bartering system of buying more gives discounts, rather than milking everyone (pointy elbows and all that). Course common sense and HL3/HL2 episodic gaming has went out the window whilst hello HATS!

Quite good idea actually. If you played enough MOBA and FPS games you know how annoying it is to have a flamer in your team, especially if he is a noob. Valve will probably implement a system where your "bad points" will slowly decay, so if you decide to be a good boy your bad history will slowly disappear. I am fine with charging people full price for each game they buy, and then depending on the amount of flame they dish out the next game might be cheaper or more expensive. Or flamers will get automuted for a period of time if everyone votes him/her to shut up.

What happens if the player in a few years grows up and gets an attitude change? They are punished for their past bothering?
I also cannot see how it would be regulated, who decides? I can see abuse of this system, flagging people for nothing ect.

I am sure they will slowly improve the system to a point where they all those to account.

Solaris, you crackz me up with this example! :toast:

I see that lots of people think that this idea has merit. That's interesting. I guess it may just work with some sort of global user rating system, perhaps? A bit like anon reviews of products. Yes, you'll get the types who try and game the system, but by and large crowdsourcing gives a fair result.

I still want to see the fine details and this in action before becoming convinced, though.

Thats whats happening now in dota 2. The goal is to vote after each game, which would make such behaviour barely worth it. Unfortunately, ppl only use negativ votes right now. Recommendations are rare. The punishment is still very light and barely noticable but its a good move in the right direction.

I dont really care about the pricing, as long as the game is fun and the ppl agreeable.

unsustainable business model and could kill off dota 2 if they try and implement it. Dota 2 already has stiff competition from other similar games.

I beg to differ. There are really 2 major players in the MOBA Genre, League of Legends and Heroes of Newearth. Now at a glance you could say the games are near identical, they are Free To Play MOBA games with Cash Shops. But when you actually play the games, they are very, very different.

Let's start with LoL, it's always been F2P, and they are trying to make the game as accessible (See Casual) as possible, but also push it along as a competative game. Simply put, it just isn't working. There is an ongoing season, but the game in the e-Sports world has already passed its peak. It's no longer a featured event in MLG like it was in 2011, and with every passing month the game becomes less about competition and growing, and more about getting extra character models and dumbing down game mechanics that are too "complicated". I also must say, LoL has one of the WORST communities i've ever played with. It's like playing DotA with the CoD community, everyone is just so miserable and angry.

Then there's HoN, it's converted to F2P after being a single--rather cheap--B2P game, and concentrates pretty heavily on competative game play. Most of the highly skilled DotA:A players ended up playing HoN when it launched because it basically just took DotA, made it prettier, faster-paced, and more complex. It has never seen the fame that LoL has, but it's community is much smaller and more competative, and the skill level of the average player is much higher.

So where does DotA2 fit in? The answer is perfectly in the middle. It's a game that can be hyper-competative, has backing from one of the biggest names in the industry and the current developer of DotA:A, and if it's F2P will attract some of those that don't want to be bound to a purchase. Almost everyone that games on a PC has a Steam Account that they regularly use, so throwing a high qality F2P MOBA game right on there, with full integration, puts Valve and DotA2 in an excellent place. I'm willing to bet if DotA2 launched this year, by the end of next year it will have at least as many active players as LoL. The Beta alone constantly has more people playing than HoN.

League of Legends has the worst community ive ever seen in any game... So many trolls and scumbags.

I guess that is what they are trying to do with the council or whatever, but basically this idea relies on other players voting.

I think Gabe was referring to the guys that come on servers Hey watch my leet hax.....get them at Artificial aiming.com we beta tested the game and make Valve look like they are doing it to fuck you over.......I could and would love to see a hacker have to pay for a game at $100 to $200 would you still buy a hack with aim-bots,wall esp? While everyone else with a valve rating in "Good Standing" gets them free. IE no hack no illegal way round the system or cheating the system.

This looks more like a scheme to keep people from quitting prematurely. It'll probably factor in how many games you dropped as to whether you need to pay to play, as well as peer review.

Sounds like a stupid idea, unless they can get this perfect, I don't see how in the world they would know if your being nice or not, you can't trust people to vote because if its a angry person they will just give everyone bad rep.
