Hey guys.

I found a good deal on this ram

http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT2KIT25664AA1067

I am wondering tho if the CL7 will show a noticeable decrease in performance considering I am gaming.

Would I get better performance if I would declock the ram to 800mhz and set the timings to something like CL5? Do you know if this ram could take an increase in voltage to allow a decrease in latency?

Thanks

You would getter performance from a better kit overall. and 84 bucks for 4gb of ddr2 is outrageous. i have a 4gb kit of crucial ballistix in my FS thread for 40 bucks and they run 800 at CL4

With DDR2, 800Mhz CL4/5 is fine. I never seen a difference between 1066 and 800.

Corsair 800 2GB kit I had did 1100 easily, but ran at CL7 instead of the rated 800/CL5

I have another Corsair 4gb 1066 kit that maxes out at 1200 / CL7

Bottom line, you can usually get the same speed with a 800 kit, and for less (but no gurantees!)

I am not actually paying 80$ for that. That page is only for reference of the ram.

I was also wondering if its a better idea to lower the rate to 800mhz and decrease the latency that way. Not sure which is more important. Speed or latency

Or just keep them at 1066 CL7 (but I don't know how bad CL7 is)

Or... what is the correct procedure to try increase the voltage and lower the timings? Do you even need to increase voltage to try decrease timings? I don't know much about ram

Intel Machines rely on bandwidth

AMDs more so on Latency

If you didnt read the link it has ram for less than 40 bux that will whip on 800 MHz at CL5.

I am not actually paying 80$ for that. That page is only for reference of the ram.

I get these for less than 20 bux :)

It's also 4 gigs of this.

Anyway, good thing if it will relies more on bandwidth since I do have a intel CPU.

Right now would just like to know if its safe to increase the voltage to lets say 1,9 (they use 1,8 stock) and try to set the CL to 6 or something

What would be the maximum voltage increase I should attempt on these? Would 2,0 be safe? 2,1?

All I can say is if you want to actually damage the OS via instability if increasing voltage doesnt help (Yes BSODs of anykind damage the OS) Go Ahead. And I mean Test with Memtest, Run games, watch movies, run internet.

Before you even do that ensure your motherboard is cooled along with the ram and the ambient environment temperature is cool

1066 cl 7 is just really bad, 5 is pretty good. 800 cl 5 is normal budget ram. Looks like leftovers no one wanted for 10 years.

considering you can get 1600MHz DDR3 at 6 CAS

had no idea they even made DDR2 over 6CL. That's like..super budget memory. I picked up 4gbs of 5CL 1066 ram on the forums last week for $43 w/ shipping and everything. Just look around, plenty of deals to be found

because for 1 its just 800 MHz that had a clock speed increase. normally slower ram comes out first then it gets better from there
