Not much for benchmarks for the 3570K yet. So wondering what the extra 4 threads (and bit of cache) would get me in the 3770K. I mostly game, but I do spawn up VMs from time to time, encode songs here and there.

What benefits would there be for the i7?

Benchmarking.... if you do any of that... an i5 won't be able to beat the i7. You also will notice some zipper responses IMO. I have owned the i5 750, i5 650, i7 860, i7 920, i5 2400K, i7 2600K and a couple more of the i series and every i7 I've had I could tell the difference in my day to day activities against an i5. All I do with them is Game, Benchmark and occasionally (very limited) video encoding. I would say get the i7 3770K unless money is the issue.... in which an i5 will still be more than fine.

Well i was speccing out a system. got to a total of $2500. of which point i went AHHHHH!.

Cut down on some things i didnt really need. Lesser mobo, dvd writer instead of blu ray reader, 8gb ram instead of 16gb. got to $2300.

I can afford either one, its more or less not sure if i wanna pay it.

I was also setting up a machine for a buddy. trying to stay below $1500. was tricky without going super budget. but picked an i5 for him. (totaled $1650).

so was curious how they might perform differently, if i wanna cut the cost of mine some more.

The difference given by the additional cache is negligible but with software that can use the additional threads the i7 is a good deal faster than the i5, still you would not se any difference in games because there aren't so many games which use more than 4 cores so clock speed and more importantly IPC both win (instructions per clock) over core count and threaded horsepower.

If you'll use your build mostly for gaming pick the 3570k and go for the 7970/ gtx 680.

Are you dead set on the Vertex 4? It uses OCZ's new proprietary controller which isn't that faster than the Sandforce based Vertex 3. Anyway I'd recommend you Corsair or Intel over OCZ.

Any reason you recommend Intel or Corsair?

I was looking at benchmarks a bit ago. The Vertex 3 seemed to be in the top 3 various different performance tests. It seemed to average the highest. I was reading that the vertex 3 did have some problems and there were failures with them. The hope is that this new controller will fix that.

My main requirement for SSD was about 240gb in size. If you have other suggestions, im open to them.

Hell, you can probably get the new Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB. It uses 34nm Toshiba Toggle Mode flash and is very, very fast. No issues with async, no issues with latency and no firmware issues when running 3.2 or 3.3.2.

I bet you can get that even cheaper since us newegg is selling it for 250... Then probably grab that mobo you picked first..

As for the chip... I've went from i5 to i7 on 1156 and I don't want to go back down... I'll continue to spend that extra to get that chip with hyper threading...

I suggest going to a Crucial M4 128gb or Samsung 830 it should lessen your budget by a nice margin.

also might I suggest air cooling?

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or Noctua NH-D14? or Thermalright Silver Arrow?

those should be cheaper than h100 specially the hyper 212 evo.

the noctua nh-d14 and silverarrow are on part with the h100 in terms of cooling, imo the air cooling should help you out with air circulations inside your case.

samsung spinpoint f4 1tb/2tb forgot which one, but although it is by seagate, samsung might make you sleep better.

intel SSD are good but more expensive, go crucial or samsung,

If your not dead set on the case

how about a NZXT Phantom? they should be cheap.

how about a reference Zotac/MSi/EVGA/ASUS GTX 680 just those at 499.99$

also for motherboard look at ASRock Z77 extreme something should be good for the price

For the H100, looks like it can get me that little something extra.

"Samsung might make you sleep better?" Does the drive sleep alot? I know at work people had issues with green drives with VMs running on them. Made it slow. I like to run VMs from time to time. So would like more of a black drive for that.

Yeah i am deadset on that case. love the look of it, and its features.

For the video card, most GTX 680, 7970s are priced around $540-$550 in Canada. They like to increase the prices of stuff for some reason. Even if our currency is about even.

That mushkin drive recommended above had an amazing price on it for $200. But it's sold out on that price :(

Ill keep looking at drive options, I probably could save a good chunk there.

All depends whats on sale when ivy comes out.

those are all very high costs for the machine specs that you are building...

Post some screenies of the cart so we can see where the best place to save might be.

They are all prices w/o rebates and such. I wanted a high estimate of what it would cost, sort of a worst case scenario :p Could post a cart, but those are pretty well the items im going with.

Dude, 7970 can be had for $449 on NCIX. ;) GTX680, yeah, still hawtness that it is, will not lose pricing yet.

If these cards are selling for this cheap now, the other will more than likely see similar price drops. I was mentioning a fwe days ago on TS I expected another AMD GPU price drop soon..then we hear of the free games..which might negate that drop...but the cards without games...;)

I get you wanting t ocover the worst case...but dude...you'll die of a heart attack doing that. Please don't.

Anyway, to answer your quyestion in the OP, get the 3770k. Why? Play with both, and I think nearly 95% of people would prefer the 3770k. If you are interested in 3570K, get 2500K or 2550K, and OC the piss out of it, and buy OC warranty to cover the OC>

Ah, yeah, i see where you are headed...you wanna make sure you don't go to the store and short-change yourself..THAT makes sense.

I'm waiting for the launch as well..I got 5 boards here to review, expecting maybe 4 more, and no chip. I'm gonna be working like a madman to get these all done.

Haha best of luck. Im hoping the ASUS board works well with it. I had an ASUS board back with a P4. 478 socket i believe. Didnt do much special with it, but it was pretty reliable. My buddy has a P45 or something for his q6600 from asus, also quite good.

So hoping the LE from the current series will serve me well.

He'll, I still have my Asus SK8V! I am actually trying to get that machine back up and running, as I want to see how well it can perform relative to when I built it back in '04, considering how much I have learned and how much cooling tech has matured, I would love to see 2.6ghz on air with my FX51 ;) I am trying to figure out how best to modify my Tt Xaser V to fit bigger/better fans as well as to clean up the rat's nest of wires that case inherent to. Gonna try my (amateur) hand at making my own wiring cutouts in the motherboard backplate.
Anyway, that's for another thread...

I say go with the i7, it will not only perform better, it will be worth more when Haswell comes out.

Case Coolermaster storm trooper $160
Motherboard ASUS P8Z77-V LE $167
Memory G.SKILL F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL 16GB $113 (not sure if this is similar with the one I have but G.SKILL Ripjaws Z 16gb CL9)
Optical drive LG GH24-NS90 $25
Video Card ASUS Radeon 7950 DirectCU II $490 (if you can get a 7970 right now or in the next few days for a good price go for it or go with 680)
Processor intel core i7 3770K $320~
Cooling COrsair H100 $120 (if your dead set on this go ahead it's a monster cooler, but if you really want to save some bucks if your way over budget I suggest dropping to cm hyper 212 evo or don't buy one right now and buy one in the next pay check or something)
ssd OCZ vertex 4 256GB $370 (go intel 510 or 520 or something, found somewhere near that same price range)
Hard disk Seagate Barracuda 2tb $140 (if you can get those 2tb wd caviar black or make sure that the seagate barracuda is the one with 64mb cache) (btw you can hold of this one too together with the cpu cooler and just buy them on the next pay check)
Power Supply Corsair TX750 $120 (well for a monster setup I would suggest the Silver or gold version but the bronze version ain't so bad)

ivy i5 vs i7?

just go with whatever you can afford ^_^

So total with sales was about $2300. Went with the mushkin chronos deluxe 240gb instead. A seagate 2tb (64mb i think). 7970 for $450. ASUS P8Z77-V (I had some worries last minute that the LE might hold the OC back, so spent an extra $30 to get more phases.) Otherwise used the same parts.

Ive had a Corsair TX750 in my current setup and it's served me well. So went with the Modular version of that.

awesome that should be a kick ass system ^_^ it will take quite a while if you find any games that could put your system to it's knees

Oh, I feel terrible, I meant to PM you yesterday! I just got a Switch 810 (white) case and HALE90 850W Modular (80+ Gold) PSU for a grand total of $274 shipped! Newegg was having a 20% off sale, so the case was $130 (from $170) and the PSU was $145 (from $180)... I kept thinking "I need to tell Hybrid_Theory, the guy building an IVB rig, I'm sure he'd jump on it"...

:( :(

That does sound like one hell of a setup you are about to be putting together though!!!! Congratulations :D

Get the 2700K and overclock the snot out of it!

You won't get the same nerdgasmic pleasure out of IB, because it runs so hot when overclocked and doesn't go as far.
