GTX470's in SLI? In this day and age? Questions inside...

Ok, so I sat out the entire 2xx/4xx generations of cards so I don't know much about the 470s, but I am talking with a local guy who is selling his dual-470 SLI setup and offered them to me, with a 90GB Corsair ForceGT 3 SSD, and a brand new OCZ ZX850 power supply for $300 total. One is by MSI, the other by Gigabyte, I believe, and I would like to know if this is a good deal on the package to tide me over until the 4GB GTX680 is available and I can afford a multiple monitor setup? I would be using them for catching up on the games I missed over the past few years (STALKER, Crysis, and other games that are less demanding than Cryais), and I would be using either a 1680x1050 monitor or 1920x1080 monitor (the former I already have, so perhaps both?).

It seems like a good deal.

I guess I would like to know if this is worthwhile, or should I pass? Thanks all!

for the price and everything you are getting is worthwhile. To me I would by it all, then sell the GTX470s and get something newer(That SSD is really nice). I have 1 GTX470, and they really are not that great of cards to be honest. THey don't scale well in sli either. maybe 75%. 2 6870s beat 2 GTX470s in almost every game. Not to mention the GTX470s are loud and hot.

Thanks for the replies! If I can find someone who wants to buy an OCZ ZX850 power supply that is basically brand-new, I will definitely go for it.

my friend has them and they run freaking great... hell sometimes he will update to a beta driver and forget that SLI went off... won't notice till he plays something like witcher 2, and then its ZZZZOOOOOOMMMM.


And whoever said the 6870 will beat the 2 470's is smoking something... they trade blows in single card and SLI... also NV's SLI drivers are teh shit. They are loud and hot though, that is true. They also sustain massive OC's and scale well... so you can really get alot of performance out of that setup.

I said 2 6870s will beat 2 470s. 470s are good cards and I guess for the price id do it, but they are loud and hot and have horrible performance to watt ratios.

great deal, grab it. but do put some thought into the swapout suggestion. While I personally wouldn't go 6870 crossfire, the 470's should fetch 120-150 each when sold, at the high end that essentially a 7870 add 80-100$ and it's a 7950. Plus it may also be a GTX 670 if you're willing to wait for that to come out.

470 sli is still decnetly fast, but not as fast as current offereings and single cards are always easier. I run 480 sli and while it can still keep pace most of the time, newer solutions would do so without the high heat, power, and noise.

Good deal, if you decide to take them sell the cards and get a new gen care Radeon 7xxx or Geforce 6xx, or if he could sell the SSD & PSU only take those

Awesome deal! I paid 150 euros for my Gigabyte GTX470 SOC in January and I won't regret that I bought this. Still runs games pretty good in 1080p. This runs hot and draws a lot of power, but it don't care.

Yup, my 470s continue to soldier on. Until I can find a single GPU that will out perform them on every level I won't be switching at all.

Thanks for all of the responses, guys! He is also selling a 2500K, Z68 UD3H MB, Corsair H60, and Logitech G510 (keyboard, I think that is the model?). I can get it all for, well, more than four hundred but less than six hundred... I am really having a hard time deciding, I mean yeah I want to get it as it's a heck of a deal i think, but I don't know if I would be able to sell what I don't want/need... I don't want to lay out the cash and end up "stuck" with stuff I don't intend to use. I figure that if I were able to sell everything I would actually come out ahead money wise, but I don't know if I should...

If your finances won't allow you to pick up the entire set (even if just to play with for a little and resell later)- just pick up the original bundle or make an offer for the SSD and SLI setup. He seems like a motivated seller and $$$ talks.
