Hi All;)

I have 8gb ram and an E8500 dual core cpu@ stock 3.16Ghz...my current gpu is the ati 5970 ( the dual core one )

If i were to upgrade to a gtx 680/690 would this cpu really hurt my graphics performance via bottleneck that much?
thanks for any advice ;)

Your system is not in balance - right now your CPU is killing a bunch of your FPS unless you are playing at some insane resolution, even then, the platform is unable to deliver the data to the gfx card fast enough.

You need a platform upgrade, and you will notice a noticeable boost in fps from your 5970. a cheap i2500k/ivy setup will do wonders for you.

yes undoubtedly a major bottleneck, going from a e8400@ 3.4Ghz to a fx-4100 @ 4.2Ghz made a huge improvement in performance with my 6870.

If you have the money to throw down on a 680/690 i would definitely upgrade the CPU/Mobo/Ram before upgrading you gfx.

get an SSD, and install OS on that :D... who cares if your storage HDD has an old OS on it?

I am a lazy upgrader... lol

or do this

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/fo...g-a-motherboard-without-reinstalling-windows/

its for XP but it will work the same - also you will need to refresh your windoze key. Ive done a lga775 to 1156 windows 7 once without a blue screen, but its different each time. You may have to go into safe mode and fiddle with the devices. As long as you get rid of the troublesome devices you will be good... 15 minutes of work vs... well hours to reinstall all your stuff.

Are you using IDE or AHCI? Cause that can be a pain in the butt.

Also to answer your question - some games will work and others will have a fit. For steam all you will need to do is copy your steamapps game folder (in C:\proggie files\steam\) to the newly installed version of steam.

I went from a 655k to a 2120+z68. Noticed an improvement. Listen to the guya, not steering you wrong at all.

Edit:

Oh and my 460s are clocked to match 560s. Roughly same gpu performance as the 5970.

Eh why overclockers? You can pick up the parts individually for cheaper from ebuyer, scan etc.

Tbh I wouldn't pay extra for an overclocked bundle as 4.5 is a pretty standard overclock on sandy/ivy. I'd take fourstaff's advice and buy the component's separately.

Since his question has been answered, can I jump in with a similar question?

My rig is currently:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3.4GHz)
8GB RAM (not sure what speed, but it was under the max for my system)
AMD Radeon HD 6850

If I were to upgrade to say a 670/680 or a 7950/7970, would my CPU be a bottleneck?

Also, probably a question for a different forum, but would getting the highest memory speed also net me a significant performance boost?

To assist in reducing a VERY SMALL bottleneck. Overclock NB frequency to ~2.4Ghz.

Also, probably a question for a different forum, but would getting the highest memory speed also net me a significant performance boost?

Mem speed ties into NB frequency, example if running 1333 cl7 you can run stock NB frequency as raising mem speed will produce no noticeable improvement, if you overclock NB then raising mem speed willl also net you an increase. In my use anything above 1600 cl6 is a waste.
