No More Monthly AMD Catalyst WHQL Drivers???

Just an Info

AMD will make a announcement today regarding their WHQL Catalyst Drivers new release schedule. Instead of monthly releases, AMD will release drivers more often that will focus on fixing issues with the newest games.

This is actually a good thing. We won’t have to wait 1 month before we can actually enjoy the latest games released.

But until further information we are left to wonder.

- AMD will end monthly Catalyst driver releases starting with Catalyst 12.5 (which won’t exist). They have decided to focus harder on quality and improvements vs regular updates which may not bring many new things. This way there will be no need for two separate driver development paths every month: one to get the official WHQL driver and another that keeps doing the regular driver development.

- We should expect more “hot fixes” and “preview drivers” when new games are released or urgent fixes are required.

- There is a beta driver we are testing right now that fixes the Eyefinity tearing on the third monitor when mixing outputs. I have verified that it works with Souther Islands based cards, so I don’t know if it will work with previous cards. Anyway, if no major issues are found, this driver should be publicly available next week.

Well, I never had any problem with AMD driver on my side, I think this could be good news to fix thing faster for those who have problem.

But I think it sound a bit like: Go people, test our fix right now, we won't pay other people to test the fix"

Depends how they do it really, if they make intelligently automate it wouldn't really be a problem.

For example you install a game, catalyst sees you've installed that game so it pulls an update specifically for that game.

The update would be really small if they can do it that way.

Makes sense. When a new games out, problems are found, and they fix them, the people that are having problems want it fixed now, not in a month. Remember, people are only supposed to update drivers if they are experiencing a problem.

Yeah right now there are problems with the Catalyst that are almost 5 years old they STILL HAVE NOT FIXED. Now they just dumped all the beta testing they should be doing in house on the public? Are you kidding me? Screw AMD.

Erm, no. The main problem is the long wait for WHQL certificate. It takes so long they can't deliver updates when needed. For example when a game is released, they'll have WHQL drivers ready next month. Most gamers will want support now, not next month. Now, they already had WHQL and beta driver channels where they basically released WHQL driver which was the same as the one actually having WHQL certificate, just without it. Makes sense?
They basically won't bother with WHQL anymore as much and instead deliver driver updates more often if needed. There could be 5 updates a month if there is a need for it. Or they might not release any if there isn't one.

i personally love this idea, however they need to make a definitions database like that of a anti-virus program, this update practice will work flawlesssly, and they already have the perfect candidate software for this practice.... the CAPs
