Hi!

I just ordered a Noctua NH-D14 which comes with a "NT-H1" thermal compound and also have a "Arctic Silver Ceramique" TIM.

Which should I use rather (Which is better)?

Greetz!

Noctua NT-H1 is good. don't put too much thought into thermal paste.

But with the massive cooler I got TIM could really make a difference, especially as I don´t change the TIM inside the Ivy Bridge CPU I´m gonna get.

Benchmark Scores 2cm mark on bench with a razor blade.
Any of those pastes will be good enough.
Generally ceramic compounds are supposed to not perform as good as the non-ceramic compounds and is pretty much made obsolete by the new non-conductive thermal compounds out there.

Just make sure you has some diluted isopropyl and cotton buds to clean off the old thermal paste.
Or just buy arcti-clean.

I see you are using a stock cooler so there should be no movement of the cooler when placing it back on.
I think that is the biggest issue with the big coolers.
You think you have the cooler set perfectly on the CPU only to find you have to move it one way or another so the bracket can lock into the heatsink.

Yup NT-H1 is good enough :) I have used it. Now I use thermalright Chill Factor III /CF III and it performs abit better than NT-H1 but difference is nothing to worry :) since its only 1-3c ... and soon gonna try Thermaltake TG-1 or Prolimatech PK-1.

How thick is the paste? Am I going to be able to use my finger to spread it out?

NEVER USE FINGER to spread your TIM. use a credit card. works like a charm.

mask off an area apply some tim at a side, and fill the cracks( b/w heatpipes) and apply it like you do with a body filler.

make a low angle with the heatsink base to get a smooth finish. remove masking tape. slap on the heatsink D:

I think he means a finger cover in plastic wrap or something. I'd hate to imagine he meant bare finger...

You mean the skin fat binding with the TIM makes it perform worse? I have thin plastic gloves but did not think about using them for TIM.

Squirt a pea or rice grain sized worth of TIM onto the processor. Do not spread it out, instead squish the heatsink down for it to spread naturally.

But the end result would not cover the the whole IHS?

It will just about cover the middle part, which is the important part. You will need a tiny bit more if your heatsink is direct heatpipe with some grooves. Too much TIM will cause a worse temp than a shitty TIM applied correctly.

It doesn't have to. It only has to cover the center, the area where the chip is contacting the IHS.

I second that.
Whichever product or whichever applying method you use, you're always better off with thinner layer.

I use Arctic Cooling MX without complaints.

I really like MX4 as it spreads soooooooo well. I also loved my OCZ Freeze, sadly it's been discontinued

This time around I have a lga 2011 processor, so I put much more time than usual, and it seems to have worked much better than my 1st application. I put one line which was about 2 grains of rice in length and thicker than 1 grain in width/height. And that's with the H80 cooler (pretty flat surface)

what socket/processor will you be putting it on?

NT-H1 is a quality paste, don't worry about using it.

The NH-D14 has a solid base, the best method is a pea sized drop in the middle and let the cooler spread it out, gone are the days of spreading TIM over all the IHS.

Personally, I use Arctic MX-2 and MX-4. though some people swear by Gelid GC-Extreme. I find the results are usually within 1 or 2 degrees within each other which is pretty negligible so it just comes down to which evers cheaper or more value for money.

Standard pea or grain of rice or just a tad bit more than that in the middle should be perfect then

putting a bit too much thermal paste has very little effect (putting wawy to much does though lol), but not putting enough can have worse effects lol

Included stuff is good. Pea sized, do not spread, just center the HSF before setting it down. The point of TIM is to fill microscopic unevenness in each of the surfaces, not to create a layer between the HSF and CPU lid.

Don't worry, be happy.

I just ordered a Noctua NH-D14 which comes with a "NT-H1" thermal compound and also have a "Arctic Silver Ceramique" TIM.

Which should I use rather (Which is better)?

ive silver ceramic, a massive tube and its going no where near my main rig again, arctic silver mx-4 is doing better then it, the noctua stuff should be good,
silver ceramic did work , but ive 2-5 degrees better heat levels with all else the same 72 max load v 67 now max load on my listed main rig.

2C between the best TIM in the market and an average aftermarket TIM, no its not worth your time. Rule of thumb is to apply the one which is easiest to clean nowadays, unless you are going for super heavy overclocks.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-January-2012/1468/5

If you are interested

Funny the best paste on that list isn't even for sale. It's some throw in paste that comes with a cooler.

I switched from OCZ freeze to Gelid GC Extreme. Great consistency but I'm still open to see if there's something better. Unfortunately all these roundups have very different results, and I'm not satisfied with any of the methods used. It's near impossible to pick out the real pack leader when they're always switching places.
